Tulsa's Varsity 4+ earned a gold medal while the team finished second overall at the American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, N.J. This was TU's fourth appearance in The American Championship and fourth silver-medal finish.
Â
"Today was a tough result because the team has done really well all season and we all knew we had a shot at the Championship," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "I am very proud of these women and all of the things they have accomplished this year and for their performances today. The coaches all did a great job of getting our student-athletes ready to compete and they did, but we just have to get faster. Hats off to UCF because they did a great job, as did all of the teams in the conference. We've all gotten faster, which is good for the conference and for us because it makes us all better."
Â
Tulsa won the 2nd Varsity 4+ race as Sara Fazel, Daniela Fusco-House, Nicole Workman, Amy Pitzel and Julia Dunn crossed the finish line in a time of 8:31.70, nearly four seconds faster than second-place UCF (8:35.33) and more than six seconds better than Temple (8:38.07).
Â
In the Varsity 8+, Sam Barber, Helen Leigh, Ellie Russell, Lucy Coleman, Veronique Ulrich, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Paige Hallam, Sophia Camara and Hannah Vissers turned in a second-place performance with a time of 7:02.33, falling behind UCF by just under three seconds (6:59.60) and ahead of SMU by just over three seconds (7:05.64).
Â
For their efforts, Russell and Vissers were each tabbed to The American all-conference first team, while Barber and Leigh were second-team selections.
Â
Lindsey Smith, Annah Lance, Nichole Backus, Summer Neary and Meredith Galloway raced the 3rd Varsity 4+ to a third-place time of 8:57.56, trailing San Diego State (8:43.32) and UCF (8:48.11), but topping UConn, Temple, SMU and Sacramento State.
Â
TU finished fourth in both the 2nd Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races.
Â
The Golden Hurricane was also announced as the Team Academic Excellence award winner, which is given to the team with the highest cumulative GPA.
