TULSA, Okla. – Morgan Neal went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, but Kiwi McDaniel's two home runs powered UConn to a 3-1 win over Tulsa in game two of the three-game series on Saturday at Collins Family Softball Complex.
Julia Hollingsworth tripled and scored the only run for the Golden Hurricane (29-23, 9-11), while Shelby Estocado and Shannon Hughes had hits for the home squad. Madison Higley went a season-high 6.0 innings in the circle and she allowed three runs on five hits and a pair of walks.
Meanwhile, McDaniel drove in all three runs for the Huskies (10-33, 5-15). Her offensive effort backed Jill Stockley's start in the circle as Stockley yielded just one run off five hits with three strikeouts to improve to 10-13.
UConn jumped ahead in the top of the first after the visitors loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a walk. McDaniel lofted a sacrifice fly to left field and Higley limited the damage to just a run in the frame.
The sophomore lefty retired nine straight hitters before McDaniel's solo homer in the top of the fourth, which put the Huskies on top 2-0.
The Hurricane broke through and cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Hollingsworth ripped her fifth triple of the season to the gap in right-center field. Neal followed with a single up the middle to make it 2-1.
However, McDaniel got the run back and reclaimed the two-run lead for UConn in the top of the sixth with her second homer of the day.
Tulsa had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, but Stockley retired the side in order to preserve the 3-1 UConn victory.
The series and regular-season will conclude at noon on Sunday, May 6. Following the game, TU will honor its senior class of Estocado, Hughes, Ashley Kiser and Emily Watson following the contest.
