TULSA, Okla. – Playing in her final home game, senior Emily Watson allowed just one hit and struck out 14 as Tulsa closed the regular-season with a 4-0 win over UConn on Sunday afternoon at Collins Family Softball Complex.
Watson struck out the first eight batters that she faced and retired the first 10 hitters before an infield single with one out in the fourth. She then sat down the final seven that she faced, six of which were retired on strikes.
Meanwhile, Rylie Spell led the offense for the Golden Hurricane (30-23, 10-11), who now has recorded at least 30 wins in 17 consecutive seasons, by going 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Sarah Briers and Julia Hollingsworth each drove in runs for TU to back Watson's strong start.
Watson struck out the side four times on the day, including the first two innings. After two strikeouts in the third, Reese Guevarra flied out to end the run of eight straight Huskies (20-34-5-16) down on strikes.
Kelli Bates broke up the perfect game in the fourth with her one-out, bunt single. However, Watson struck out the next batter and Spell threw out the runner trying to steal second base to end the inning.
The Tulsa offense provided Watson all the support that she would need in the bottom of the fourth with three runs off three hits and an error.
Hollingsworth got on base to start the frame via a UConn miscue before Morgan Neal walked. Haley Meinen's bloop single to center field then loaded the bases for Briers, who grounded a hit up the middle to score the game's first run. With two down in the inning, Spell also singled up the middle to bring home two more for a 3-0 cushion.
In the fifth, senior Ashley Kiser opened the frame with a double to right field and she would come home on Hollingsworth's two-bagger to deep left field. That would be the final run of the contest and Watson cruised through the sixth and seventh to close the game and improve to 20-11 in the circle.
Following the contest, Tulsa honored its senior class of Shelby Estocado, Shannon Hughes, Kiser and Watson. The group has helped TU to 142 wins, two American Athletic Conference Tournament Championships and the 2017 conference regular-season crown.
The Hurricane will travel to Tampa, Fla., May 10-12, for the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship. TU, which will be the No. 6 seed, will be looking for its third consecutive tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team's title defense will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) when it faces third-seeded Wichita State (30-19) on Thursday, May 10.
