Tulsa junior Alessia Ruggiu and incoming freshman Sarolta Papp will represent their countries at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships, which will be hosted in Poznan, Poland, July 24-29.
"I am really happy for Alessia and Sarolta, and am pleased to see their hard work pay off," Tulsa Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We are all excited to follow them as they row next week at U23 Worlds."
The Italian Rowing Federation announced that Ruggiu, from Trieste, Italy, will represent her country as a member of the Women's Coxless Four. Ruggiu stroked TU's 2nd Varsity 8+ during the 2017-18 season, capturing wins over Central Oklahoma, Clemson, Creighton, Miami and Notre Dame, as well as earning a fourth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship.
"I've been rowing for a long time and have won a lot of National Championships, but I have always wanted to do something more," Ruggiu said. "I was ready to make a huge step forward in my career as a rowing athlete, so I worked hard to make the Italian team and now I am unbelievably proud to represent my nation doing something that I love."
Papp will represent Hungary, as she will compete in the Lightweight Pair and Lightweight Double.
Since 2013, Ruggiu and Papp are the seventh and eighth Tulsa rowers to represent their country (Colleen Wohlrab, Emalia Seto, Jamie Roloff and Zoe Fleischmann – United States; Jennifer Casson – Canada; Sophia Camara - Brazil) at the U-23 Worlds.
