TULSA, Okla. –– Tulsa head football coach Philip Montgomery was pleased walking off the field Saturday morning following his team's first full scrimmage of preseason camp.
"I was pleased with our overall scrimmage. I thought we put some decent drives together. We had a couples sustaining drives. We had some short drives. I wanted to have some explosive ones like that," said Montgomery. "Defensively, we created some turnovers and had some three-and-outs."

It was a scrimmage that saw both Luke Skipper and Seth Boomer connect for touchdown throws with Keenen Johnson and Justin Hobbs on the receiving end. Defensively, Trevis Gibson had two sacks, while McKinley Whitfield and Jabari James had interceptions.

"Both sides of the ball have a lot of things to work on," said Montgomery. "We had too many penalties offensively that you can't have, those are drive killers. On defense we were in some third down situations and couldn't get off the field, and then there were a couple of explosive plays that we have to eliminate. We have a lot of work still to do."
Montgomery added, "we played a lot of young guys. We played some guys that needed experience in different areas. Until we watch the tape, I don't know exactly what we got, but I feel good about it walking off the field."
Montgomery also talked about the quarterback group following the Saturday scrimmage. "I've been talking about it, and hopefully we're going to stay on this track. But. I'm really pleased with what we're doing in the quarterback room. Those guys are a year older and more experienced, and I think today our receiver corps did a nice job today of making plays and getting in the right spot and those guys are anticipating throws and bare quarterbacks are being accurate," said Montgomery.
"I think our percentages were pretty high. We may have had about six balls batted down, and we need to eliminate those, but we didn't have many bad throws today," Montgomery added.
Following today's scrimmage, Tulsa players signed autographs and took photos with the fans in attendance.
The Hurricane will be off Sunday before returning to the field Monday morning. Coach Montgomery will introduce the 2018 Tulsa team to the public Tuesday at the Annual Tulsa Golden Hurricane Football Kickoff Luncheon presented by ONEOK and One Gas at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in downtown Tulsa.
