Tulsa Continues to Prepare for Home Opening Opponent UCA

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team was on the turf of H.A. Chapman Stadium today for a 2-hour workout in continuing its preparations for the season opener.

"It was second day of practice with school in session," said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery. "We have to learn to practice better now that we're going against the scouts. We have keep the same intensity and competitive edge, and our guys are learning that process.

Following Wednesday's practice, the Golden Hurricane football team was treated to watermelon and popsicles from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

"We have a great relationship with the FCA. Our guys are heavily involved in it, and several of the top-ranking members of the FCA are former TU football players. That relationship has always been great and will continue to be, and this is a fun thing they do after practice for our players," said Montgomery.

Single-game tickets are available for the season-opening For Our City/Hometown Heroes game against the UCA Bears on Saturday, Sept. 1 with a kickoff time of 6:00 p.m. from Chapman Stadium. Fans can purchase single game and season tickets online at TulsaHurricane.com, by calling 918.631.GoTU (4688) and in person at the Donald W. Reynolds Ceneer Ticket Office, Mon-Fri. 8:30-5 p.m.

QUARTERBACKS UPDATE

Although more experienced this year, the quarterback group for the Hurricane is still a rather young contingent. Montgomery is looking for his offense to be more explosive and balanced than it was a year ago, and that starts at the quarterback position.

Tulsa returns two signal-callers who shared the starting spot – Chad President and Luke Skipper – in 2017.

President began the first six games, and Skipper started the next five contests. President rushed for 429 yards, nine touchdowns and threw for another 921 yards and three TDs, while Skipper completed 56-percent of his passes for 1,141 yards and three TDs.

Red-shirt freshman Seth Boomer joins President and Skipper as the quarterbacks who received the majority of snaps during the fall. Boomer quarterbacked at nearby Collinsville High School and threw for over 2,000 yards as a prep senior in 2016.

"The quarterbacks had a good camp," said Montgomery. "We got better each and every day, and there are still things we have to keep growing and learning from. The competition that we've had, the way that they've helped each other has been really good. As long as we keep that type of attitude and continue to strive to benefit TU football, then we'll be fine there."

Junior Will Hefley III, who saw his only action in the 2017 season finale, true freshman Davis Brin, who enrolled in January, and walk-on Brad Marquardt add depth at the quarterback position. Junior Zach Smith is sitting out the season after after transferring from Baylor.
