Tulsa Volleyball Takes Two on Opening Day in Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team earned two wins at the Purdue Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier on Friday. The Golden Hurricane kicked off the season with a sweep against Bowling Green (25-21, 25-12, 25-22), followed by a four-set victory against Wofford (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22).

TU (2-0) swept Bowling Green, 3-0, in its first match of 2018 at the Purdue Premier. Tulsa improved to 1-0 in a match against a Bowling Green squad that went 17-12 just a season ago.
 
In the first set, the Golden Hurricane saw production from preseason all-conference honorees Emily Thorson and Taylor Horsfall, taking the set 25-21. Thorson led the way in kills with five, while Horsfall added six digs in the set.
 
Freshman Elyse Savadove had a strong showing in the second set, boasting seven kills on nine attempts. As a team, Tulsa struck 20 kills with a .400 hitting percentage. The Golden Hurricane took the set in dominant fashion, 25-12.
 
In a close final frame, senior Rachel Moore notched three kills to lead the way for Tulsa. Lindsey Ledyard stepped up with four assists in the third set, along with Horsfall's six digs. The Hurricane used a pair of 4-0 and 5-0 runs in the final set to take down Bowling Green, 25-22.
 
For the match, Horsfall, Thorson and Mariah Pardo earned double-doubles.  Thorson and Savadove recorded 11 kills each, with Savadove boasting a .308 hitting percentage in her first collegiate contest. Horsfall collected a team-high 18 digs, while Pardo paced the team with 14 assists.
 
Tulsa 3, Wofford 1
 
In the second match of opening day, Tulsa took down Wofford, 3-1. TU improved to 2-0 for the third time in head coach Ryan Wills' tenure of five seasons.
 
Tulsa claimed the tight first set between the Golden Hurricane and the Terriers, 25-22. Seniors Thorson and Moore combined for eight kills, while Horsfall tallied seven digs in the frame. Lindsey Ledyard also added a service ace in the set.
 
The second set unfolded much the same, albeit in a more convincing fashion, as Tulsa took the second set, 25-17. Pardo led the way in assists with five, while Horsfall accumulated six more digs. Moore added four kills to lead the way for TU with eight.
 
In the third set, Wofford jumped out to a 7-12 lead. Despite a late rally from the Golden Hurricane, the Terriers would go on to take the set, 20-25.
 
The final frame began with a hot start from Tulsa, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Moore took over offensively, putting up six kills on 10 attacks. A pair of 3-0 runs in the frame helped seal the match for Wills' squad, taking the set, 25-22.
 
Overall, Tulsa totaled 48 kills in the match. Pardo recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 assists and 11 digs. Moore and Thorson led the way with double-digit kills in the win, tallying 16 and 14, respectively. Moore would finish the game with an impressive .375 hitting percentage.
 
The Purdue Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier wraps up tomorrow as TU is set to square off with No. 23 host Purdue at 2 p.m. CT.
