MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team dropped its match against Illinois State in the first match of the Marquette Invitational on Friday, 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 19-25, 20-25).
In set one, a back-and-forth battle in the first half of the set ended with Tulsa holding on, 25-20. Callie Cook paced the team in the first frame to the tune of five kills on eight attempts. Taylor Horsfall showed off her mobility on the back line, adding 10 digs in the first set.
A 5-0 run, sparked by a Maggie Hembree kill, in the middle of the stanza wasn't enough for the Golden Hurricane to take set two, dropping the frame, 25-21. Elyse Savadove made her presence felt offensively, adding four kills on a .444 hitting percentage.
A slow start for Tulsa in the third set would be enough for the Redbirds to clinch, 25-19. Rachel Moore and Hembree would tally three kills each, while Horsfall would tack on 10 more digs in the frame.
In the fourth and final set, the Golden Hurricane would rally late, but Illinois State hung on to clinch the match, 25-20. Thorson added four kills to bring her total to nine for the match.
Horsfall finished the match with a season-high 30 digs on the day. Savadove, Cook and Moore all recorded 10+ kills in the defeat. As a whole, Tulsa produced 70 digs, 47 assists and accumulated five service aces.
The Golden Hurricane will play its second and final match of the Marquette Invitational tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT, as the team takes on host and No. 21 Marquette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
