Head Coach Matilda Mossman announced today the 2019 American Athletic Conference schedule, which features eight home games at the Donald W. Reynolds Center and five games broadcasted on either ESPN3 or the American Digital Network.
The Tulsa-Wichita State (Jan. 4), Tulsa-Temple (Jan. 29) and Tulsa-SMU (Feb. 6) games will be broadcasted on the American Digital Network, while the Tulsa-USF (Feb. 16) and Tulsa-UConn (Feb. 24) games will be aired on ESPN3.
Five teams in The American advanced to postseason play last year, as UConn and USF played in the NCAA Tournament, and Cincinnati, Houston and UCF competed in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Tulsa will begin conference play at home as they host Wichita State (Jan. 4) and Memphis (Jan. 9). The Shockers registered 14 wins a year ago, including nine in league play, in their first season as a member of The American, while the Tigers finished last season with 10 wins. TU and WSU both earned wins on the opponent home court last season, but Wichita State has a 16-2 lead in the series. TU's series with Memphis is tied, 9-9.
The Golden Hurricane will make trips to ECU (Jan. 12) and UCF (Jan. 16) before returning home to host Cincinnati (Jan. 19). The Knights posted 22 wins and advanced to WNIT Second Round a year ago, while the Bearcats recorded 19 wins and made a First Round appearance in the WNIT for their first postseason bid since 2012. The Pirates earned 16 wins last year. Tulsa leads the series with Cincinnati (5-3), while the series is tied between TU and ECU (10-10), and UCF has a 9-7 lead over Tulsa.
Tulsa will travel to Houston for the only meeting between the two schools on the year on Jan. 26. The Cougars totaled 20 wins and made a First Round appearance in the WNIT for their first postseason bid since 2011 a year ago, but it was Tulsa that earned wins in both games with the Cougars last year. TU has a 17-8 lead in the all-time series with UH.
Temple comes to town on Jan. 29, before the Hurricane heads to Memphis (Feb. 2). The Owls had just 12 wins last season, including three in league play and a narrow 76-75 win over Tulsa. The Owls have a 5-1 lead in the series.
TU hosts SMU (Feb. 6) and Tulane (Feb. 10), before traveling to USF (Feb. 16), for the only matchup between Tulsa and all three schools in the regular season. USF owned a 26-8 mark last year, including a 13-3 mark in league play for a second-place finish. The Bulls competed in their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament, but fell in the First Round to Buffalo. The Green Wave earned 14 victories, while the Mustangs had 10 wins a year ago.
The Hurricane will make the trip to Cincinnati (Feb. 20), before hosting UConn (Feb. 24) at the Reynold Center. The Huskies tallied a 36-1 overall record, won the regular season and tournament American Athletic Conference championships, and advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the 11th-straight year last season.
TU will close out the conference slate with a home game against ECU (March 2), and road games at Temple (Feb. 27) and Wichita State (March 4).
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be hosted at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on March 8-11, 2018.
Tulsa's non-conference schedule was announced earlier this year and includes home games against Stetson, Saint Louis, Abilene Christian, Little Rock, Arkansas and UTEP; road contests at American, Belmont, Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin and Arkansas State; and games against Alabama, and either La Tech or host Arizona State in the ASU Classic.
