Tulsa Rowers Earn First-Place Marks in Each Race on Day One at Head of the Oklahoma
9/29/2018 6:24:00 PM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowing team earned first-place finishes in every race they competed in, in the first day of racing at the Head of the Oklahoma on Saturday on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.
"Of course today was day one of race one of a long season, but this is the way to start the season," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Today is a work day for us and I am proud of how the team handled it. Just about every student-athlete on our team raced two races today and will race two races tomorrow. We want to get everyone racing as much as possible so they learn no matter the fatigue, no matter the situation you have to go at it and perform consistently. We will regroup tonight to talk about what we can do better, but this was a great start to the season."
Sam Barber, Lucy Coleman, Ellie Russell, Helen Leigh, Veronique Ulrich, Daniela Fusco-House, Paige Hallam, Sophia Camara and Julia Herrel raced the Collegiate 8+ 'A' to a first-place finish in a time of 14:13.11. The UCF boat was 29-seconds behind for a second-place mark, while SMU was in third-place. TU's 'C' boat recorded an 11th-place time of 15:13.81, while the 'B' boat was 13th in a time of 15:20.57.
In the Collegiate 4+ event, Katie Shin, Russell, Fusco-House, Ulrich and Camara captured a first-place time of 15:40.80. TU's 'D' boat was in second place just over 25-seconds back, while the Golden Hurricane 'C' boat was fourth and the 'B' boat was seventh.
Alessia Ruggiu and Elisa Vandersloot tallied a top time of 16:58.67 in the Open 2x, Amy Pitzel and Madeline Oleksiak were fifth in a time of 17:49.25, and Elizabeth McCabe and Nicole Workman finished sixth with a time of 18:18.90.
In the Lightweight 2x, Meredith Galloway and Sydney Pirkle posted a top mark in a time of 17:57.45.
Tulsa will race in the Open 1x, Open 2-, Open 4+ and Open 4x tomorrow in the final day of the Head of the Oklahoma.
