Tulsa Women’s Tennis Drops to No. 22 UCF at ITA Kick-Off Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 23 University of Tulsa women's tennis team (5-3, 0-1) dropped its consolation match against the No. 22 UCF Knights (3-2, 1-0), 4-1, at the ITA Kick-Off tournament on Sunday.
The doubles point went back-and-forth, but UCF edged out the Golden Hurricane for the match lead early on. In the No. 2 spot, the Golden Hurricane duo of Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe earned a 6-3 win to push Tulsa ahead.
Despite going up 1-0 in doubles, Tulsa fell in two extremely close No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, 7-6(4), in both matches.
In singles, Matoula gave Tulsa its lone point of the afternoon, showing off her veteran prowess as the team's only senior. She would edge out UCF's Rebeka Stolmar in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.
In the first completed singles match, UCF's Marie Mattel edged out junior Vera Ploner, 6-3, 6-2. Soon after, freshman Arianna Capogrosso also fell in her singles match in the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-4 to the Knights' Nandini Sharma to push the Knights lead to three.
After Matoula's win in the No. 2 spot to bring Tulsa back within two, UCF managed to clinch the match in the No. 1 singles match, as Valeryia Zeleva defeated junior Martina Okalova in a tight match, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Head coach Dean Orford's squad will get a chance to rest and rebound next Saturday, as Tulsa takes on Central Arkansas inside the Case Tennis Center.
