Tulsa Hosts Houston in Home Finale Saturday Night at 6:30 PM
Sixteen seniors will be making their final appearance at H.A. Chapman Stadium Saturday night as Tulsa (3-7, 1-5 AAC) hosts the Houston Cougars (3-7, 1-5 AAC) in an American Athletic Conference matchup. The game kicks of at 6:32 p.m. (CT).
Both teams have been through the gauntlet this season. Tulsa has faced 4 top-25 foes, while Houston has played 5 teams ranked among the nation's top 25. Tulsa is the only school in the nation to have faced 8 teams that are already bowl eligible with at least 6 victories.
Houston comes into the game trying to snap a 3-game losing streak, while Tulsa is looking to win its second consecutive game. The Hurricane is coming off of a bye week after a 34-31 win over UCF two weeks ago, while the Cougars fell to #18 Memphis a week ago.
Houston's offense comes into the game putting up 394 yards and 30.3 points per contest.
For the visiting Cougars, Clayton Tune has taken over the signal-calling duties and has completed 56-percent of his passes for 1,051 yards and 7 TDs. Tune has a multitude of talented skill players at his disposal in the backfield and at the receiver positions.
Houston has 3 backs with over 300 yards rushing and each gaining over 5.0 yards per carry. Kyle Porter leads the way with 548 yards and 3 TDs, while Mulbah Car and Patrick Carr, have missed games due to injury, but have each averaged over 75 yards per contest. Car will most likely miss tonight's game, but the senior Carr could return to action for the Cougars.
Marquez Stevenson is the main target for Tune, catching 41 passes for 755 yards and 7 TDs, while Jeremy Singleton has 22 receptions for 331 yards. The tight end Christian Trahan is also targeted in the Cougars offense with 190 yards on 18 catches.
The offensive front for the Cougars has been a unit in transition the entire year with 11 different starters. All five positions have had a different starter, including 4 freshmen, in the first 10 games.
Tulsa's defense has put up some impressive performances this year, including in the last home outing against UCF when the Hurricane limited the nation's #2-ranked offense to 94 yards under its season average and 15.3 points under its 5th-ranked scoring offense. The Houston offense will create problems as well with its multitude of talented skill position players.
A pair of seniors for the Hurricane will anchor the defensive front –– Trevis Gipson and Shemarr Robinson.
Gipson has tallied 37 tackles and 11.5 of those stops resulting in lost yardage from his end position, while Robinson has 27 stops and 2 TFLs. Junior Tyarise Stevenson has started the last 3 games in place of injured Jaxon Player. Stevenson has 14 tackles, while Player, who's status is still doubtful for Saturday, has 26 stops and 5 TFLs on the season.
Juniors Cullen Wick, Jajuan Blankenship and Cade Baumann, sophomore Deven Lamp and red-shirt freshman Anthony Goodlow all get playing time in the front-line rotation as well.
The Tulsa linebacker corps is led by senior MIKE backer Cooper Edmiston, who has a team-leading and American Athletic Conference high of 86 tackles and has totaled 323 career tackles. Sophomore WILL linebacker Zaven Collins, a 2018 Freshman All-American, ranks behind Edmiston with 81 stops and had 6 TFLs and 2 pass break-ups.
At the STAR linebacker position, senior Diamon Cannon and juniors Treyvon Reeves and Yohance Burnett have both been effective in sharing playing time at that spot. Cannon has 21 stops and 3.5 TFLs on the season, while Burnett has totaled 28 tackles and 2.5 TFLs, and Reeves, who played most of the game last week after Cannon went out with an injury, has tallied 10 tackles this season.
Tulsa's secondary is long, athletic and experienced – Reggie Robinson II and Allie Green –man the corners, while the safeties are seniors Manny Bunch and Brandon Johnson. Cristian Williams and Bryson Powers control the nickel position.
Robinson has been a "big-play" performer for the Hurricane with team-highs of 4 interceptions and 8 pass break-ups to go along with 33 tackles. Green has totaled 39 tackles and 4 pass break-ups.
Johnson has 60 tackles to rank third on the team, including 40 solo stops, and also has 5 pass break-ups. Bunch has 55 stops, 3 PBUs, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the year, while Williams has 50 tackles and is coming off of a 10-tackle, one interception performance against UCF.
For Tulsa's offense, the Hurricane average nearly 400 yards per game with 266.4 coming through the air and 132.3 yards on the ground.
Zach Smith has started the first 10 games at quarterback for the Hurricane, but an injury sidelined Smith late in the first half against UCF and his status for Saturday is still questionable. Insert Seth Boomer, who started 8 games last year for the Hurricane including his first career action and start against these same Houston Cougars. Boomer led Tulsa to 17 second-half points against the Knights last time out, while completing 6-of-10 passes for 87 yards and one TD.
Smith is ranked 4th in the American Athletic Conference for passing and total offense. He has thrown for 2,567 yards, an average of 256.7 yards per game, and 13 touchdowns.
Boomer has now played in 2 games this year. Last season against the Cougars, Boomer completed 13-of-31 passes for 227 yards and one TD.
Five different receivers have become key targets for the Hurricane quarterbacks, with 4 of the 5 totaling more than 350 yards. Junior Keylon Stokes has a team-leading 820 yards, 16.7 yards per game and 5 TDs. Sophomore Sam Crawford, Jr. has 582 yards and 3 touchdowns on 44 receptions, while senior Keenen Johnson has 453 yards and Josh Johnson 388. Sophomore JuanCarlos Santana has added 228 yards on the season.
The 1-2 running back punch of Shamari Brooks and Corey Taylor II has combined for 1,216 yards and 11 touchdowns and is just 101 yards shy of hitting the 4,000-yard career rushing plateau. Brooks leads the way with 822 yards and 6 TDs and has had over 100 yards in three games, while Taylor II has gained 394 yards on the year. Red-shirt freshman TK Wilkerson has also seen playing time in the backfield, gaining 182 yards for a 4.8 average per carry and has 5 TDs on the year, including 4 on the ground and one receiving.
Tulsa's starting offensive front is made up of 2 sophomores, one red-shirt freshman, one junior and one senior. Tulsa came into the season with just 27 career starts from the offensive line after losing three players who started 128 games.
The lone senior on the offensive line, Chris Ivy, Jr., missed the UCF game with an injury, while his left tackle position was manned by true freshman Tyler Smith, who played in his second straight game and earned his first career start. The frosh may get the starting nod again in the Houston contest if Ivy's unable to go. Other than Ivy's 21 career starts, left guard Chris Paul has the most starts among Tulsa's young offensive front with 18 career starting assignments.
Red-shirt freshman right tackle X'Zauvea Gadlin has started all 10 contests this season, while sophomore center Gerard Wheeler has started since the second game of the year. Guards Dylan Couch and Dante Bivens have handled snaps on the right side, while Couch has started the last 2 games.
Defensively, the Cougars have given up 467.6 yards per game, including 297.3 passing yards and 170 yards on the ground.
The Houston front seven presents problems for opposing offenses. Derek Parish and Payton Turner lead the Cougars on the outside. Parish has totaled 32 tackles and 5.5 TFLs for -19 yards, while Turner with 28 tackles and 7.5 TFLs for-36 yards. Nose guard Aymiel Fleming and tackle Logan Hall man the interior for the Cougars.
Donavan Mutin is the leader of the linebacker corps with 45 tackles, while Terrance Edgeston has 16 stops in 7 games.
Nickel Grant Stuard and cornerback Damarion Williams anchor the secondary. Stuard has a team-high 81 tackles and 8 TFLs for -33 yards, while Williams has 56 stops and 4 pass break-ups. Safety Deontay Anderson and corner Shaun Lewis are 1-2 in pass break-ups with 8 and 7, respectively.
