AUSTIN, Texas – Alexis Perry hit two doubles and drove in three runs, while Samantha Pochop went the distance in the circle and recorded 11 strikeouts as Tulsa closed play in the Texas Invitational with an 8-1 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon.
Perry's three RBIs tied a season high for the Golden Hurricane (10-5), who went 3-2 over the weekend. Pochop allowed just one run and scattered five hits to go along with her 11 Ks to improve to 4-2 in the circle.
Josie Muffley also had a pair of hits and two RBIs at the top of the Tulsa lineup, while Sarah Briers, Haley Meinen, Morgan Neal and Jesse Smith all recorded doubles for TU.
Briers gave Tulsa an early lead over the Bearkats (5-11) that it would not relinquish. The sophomore ripped a double to center field with two outs in the second inning to plate Tori Stafford for a 1-0 lead.
Pochop held the one-run advantage and the Hurricane offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to provide more than enough cushion.
Muffley drove in a run with a single to left before Perry cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left-center. Smith then closed the rally with another double to center to bring home Perry for a 6-0 advantage.
Sam Houston State got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but Tulsa added two more runs in the sixth on a double from Meinen and another RBI hit by Muffley.
Pochop recorded scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh and ended the game with her 11th strikeout.
After three weekends on the road, Tulsa will host the OSU/TU Invitational, March 1-3, at the Collins Family Softball Complex. TU will face Northern Iowa, Illinois, McNeese State, Seattle and Syracuse in the event.
