TULSA, Okla. – Mikayla Whitten homered and drove in three runs on the day, but Tulsa fell to UNI and Illinois by scores of 10-4 and 6-4, respectively, on Friday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane (10-7) will close play in its home tournament at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday when it will host Syracuse (5-10).
Game One
Northern Iowa broke open a close game with seven runs over the final three innings to take the opening game of the day, 10-4.
Julia Hollingsworth went 3-for-3 in the contest, while Mikayla Whitten went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Chenise Delce took the loss in the circle as she allowed four earned runs over 6.2 innings to go along with six strikeouts.
The Panthers (7-5) got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first. But TU matched that with two in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Josie Muffley and a run-scoring grounder off the bat of Whitten.
UNI took a 3-2 advantage with a run in the third, but Tulsa again tied the score when Morgan Neal plated a run in the fourth.
However, the Panters added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh for a 10-3 advantage.
Whitten brought home one more Tulsa run in the bottom of the seventh, but TU could not get closer in the 10-4 setback.
Game Two
Tulsa rallied with back-to-back homers in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to come all the way back against Illinois, falling in the nightcap 6-4.
Rylie Spell and Mikayla Whitten each had a pair of hits in the game, while Samantha Pochop allowed three earned runs, but took the loss in the circle.
The Fighting Illini (12-3) had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth before Josie Muffley touched home on a passed ball.
Illinois got that run back in the fifth and added three more in the sixth for a 6-1 cushion.
In the bottom of the sixth, Alexis Perry lifted a sacrifice fly to left field before Tulsa used the long-ball to cut into the deficit in the seventh.
After a grounder to start the frame, Tori Stafford and Whitten hit back-to-back homers to pull the Hurricane within 6-4. Illinois went to the bullpen and TU put the tying run on base before Taylor Edwards closed out the game to earn her first save of the season.
