Tulsa’s Varsity 4+ Tops Minnesota and Tennessee at Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational
3/16/2019 6:02:00 PM | Rowing
Tulsa's Varsity 4+ earned a top time against Minnesota and Tennessee, while the 2nd Varsity 4+ finished ahead of Minnesota in the opening day of racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The regatta will conclude tomorrow as TU takes on Virginia and Louisville.
"I thought it was good racing," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "It is good to get back on the water and get some races under our belt. We would have liked to have done better, but our effort was there and it was a glimpse of what is to come. The good thing about round robins is you get good strokes against good teams. We are racing three crews that are perennial NCAA crews so we just need to keep improved to put ourselves in their position."
Madison Bickle, Julia Olawumi, Daniela Fusco-House, Bobbi Forster and Nicole Workman turned in first-place time of 6:22.086 in the second Varsity 4+ race on the day. Minnesota was more than two seconds back in a time of 6:24.364 and Tennessee finished third with a time of 6:31.388.
"They had a really good race," Harris said. "They learned a lot from their first row down the course to their second. Every boat improved, but Maddie and that team stepped up and it was good to see them make the changes. The whole team progressed and we are looking to get out there tomorrow and work on getting faster."
In the 2nd Varsity 4+ race, Tennessee was less than a second faster with a time of 6:25.060, while the Golden Hurricane finished second in a time of 6:25.956 and Minnesota was just over 4.7 seconds behind that in third place.
Tulsa trailed Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota and Tennessee in the Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ races on the day.
