ORLANDO, Fla. – Tulsa senior Majed Kilani dropped his NCAA Singles Championship opening round matchup to No. 36-ranked Keegan Smith of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2, on Monday at the USTA National Campus.
Despite the loss, the senior wraps up a historic career for the Golden Hurricane. The decorated Tunisia native earned 70 singles wins, three-all conference honors and two NCAA singles appearances during his time in Tulsa.
In the first frame, Kilani dropped an early break before holding his next serve to trail 2-1 to Smith. After holding his third serve of the frame to bring it back within one, the UCLA sophomore rattled off three-straight games to secure the first set, 6-2.
The second set played out similarly, with Smith once again going up 2-1 before breaking to take a two-game advantage. With momentum on his side, the Bruin won four straight to pull ahead 5-1. Kilani held serve to bring the match back within three before Smith clinched the match on serve, 6-2, 6-2.
With Kilani's historic career at TU reaching its conclusion, head coach Vince Westbrook's squad will shift its focus to the upcoming 2019-2020 season. The team will once again return a lone senior, as Jarod Hing will helm the Golden Hurricane next season.
