HOUSTON — No. 2-seed Tulsa jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but seventh-seeded ECU rallied to claim a 4-3 extra-inning victory on Friday afternoon in the third game of the American Athletic Conference Championship.
The Golden Hurricane (35-18) will await its NCAA Regional fate as the tournament field will be revealed at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 on ESPN2.
Morgan Neal and Tori Stafford each went 3-for-4 to pace the offense for TU, but the squad gave up three unearned runs behind four errors in the contest. Samantha Pochop took the loss in the circle after she gave up four hits and an unearned run in five innings out of the bullpen.
Meanwhile, Erin Poepping tossed a complete-game for the Pirates (23-31) and improved to 15-19 in the circle. She gave up three runs on three hits in the first inning, but scattered six hits over the final seven frames.
Ashleigh Inae paced the Pirates offense with a 2-for-4 outing with two RBIs.
Julia Hollingsworth and Neal started the first inning with hits and a walk to Alexis Perry loaded the bases. With one out, Rylie Spell picked up the easy RBI with a four-pitch walk for the first run of the game. Then with two down, Stafford came through with a two-run single to right field that extended the cushion to 3-0.
However, the Pirates cut into the deficit with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second and knotted the score with another run in the third.
Hollingsworth, who was named the conference's Player of the Year a day ago, kept the game tied in the fourth with the defensive play of the day.
With one out and an ECU runner on third, the senior tracked a fly ball in left and after making the catch, she tossed a perfect strike home to throw out the runner trying to score.
But the Tulsa offense could not get back on track against Poepping. The Hurricane had three hits over the final five innings and the contest went to extras after TU left the potential winning run on second base in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, ECU got a leadoff single before two groundouts pushed the runner to third base. The go-ahead run came around to score one batter later on an error.
Tulsa had one last chance in the bottom of the inning, but Poepping worked around a two-out single to close out the 4-3 victory for the Pirates.
