Sophia Camara and Sarolta Papp raced their Lightweight 2x to a first-place finish at the Henley Women's Regatta in England on Sunday afternoon. The duo earned a three boat length win over Nottingham University.
"Hats off to Sophia and Sarolta," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Match racing isn't something we do much in the United States, so it was a real unique experience to not only race in the Women's Henley Regatta, but to race this course. I was impressed with their poise and how they attacked the race course. They did an excellent job of executing the race plan, and it is a great way for Sophia to end her career at TU in her final race as a Golden Hurricane."
"We want to give a big thank you to The University of Tulsa Board of Trustees and Helen and Andy MacKay for supporting the trip. We are appreciate their love and support, as well as the fans that traveled with the team. The people here have been impressed with the support The University of Tulsa and the student-athletes have."
Julia Herrel, Ellie Russell, Veronique Ulrich and Helen Leigh were overcome by the University of Edinburgh in the second round of the Championship 4, while Elisa Vandersloot, Mikala Burns, Elizabeth McCabe and Daniela Fusco-House were topped by TIdeway Scullers in the second round of the Aspirational 4x.
"We raced a lot of races because we broke down into small boats," Harris said. "The strategy was to have as many unique experiences as possible, and by challenging the student-athletes we think this will help us improve overall for next year. We had three boats advance past the first race, and the last time we were here we only advanced one boat out of the initial race."
TU's Lightweight 2x 'B' boat, which consisted of Nichole Backus and Meredith Galloway, was defeated by Princeton in the first round. Sydney Pirkle and Amy Pitzel were bettered by Imperial/Tideway Combined in the Women's 2-, and Alessia Ruggiu and Paige Hallam were defeated by Thames Rowing Club in the Championship 2x.
In the Aspirational 4-, Nicole Workman, Taylah Eder, Helen Cassellius and Madeline Oleksiak were topped by KSRV Njord in the first round; and in the Championship 4x, Karen Undset, Julia Olawumi, Becky Coleman and Bobbi Forster finished behind the Molesey Boat Club.
