TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's and women's cross country teams will open their 2019 season on Saturday morning when they host the Hurricane Preview at Mohawk Sports Complex. The Golden Hurricane will be joined by Arkansas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the race.
The day will begin with the men's four-mile race at 8 a.m., followed by the women's two-mile race at 8:30 a.m. The Tulsa men's squad enters the season ranked No. 29 in the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll and third in the Midwest Region, while the women's team checks in at No. 6 in the region.
Since 2010, the squads have combined to win 13-of-18 possible conference cross country championships, including a run of nine consecutive titles for the men's team. That run also includes five straight men's titles (2014-18) and a pair of women's titles (2014-15) since TU joined the American Athletic Conference in 2014.
The TU men return five of its seven runners from last year's American Championship squad, led by the league's individual runner-up, Scott Beattie. The Hurricane will look to get experience for some of its younger team members this weekend as Jerik Embleton, Greg Fehribach, Michael Gates, Tyler McGinnis and Henry Williams will make their debuts, while Reed Sahadevan and Jackson Schwartz will round out the lineup.
On the women's side, the Hurricane return six of its top seven runners from the conference meet, led by Caitlin Klopfer, Jenny O'Bryan, Ashley Barnes, Alice Newcombe, Caroline Miller and Reagan Hausmann. TU earned a runner-up finish at the conference meet, just two points behind champion Wichita State.
Klopfer, Barnes and Miller all will be on the course this weekend and they will be joined by Allison Bailey, Adrena Mazzei, Jaidah McCallon and Alice Newcombe.
