TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa men's tennis team will look to clinch a pair of wins this weekend in Columbus, Ohio, as the Golden Hurricane (4-0) compete in the Ohio State regional of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Competition for TU gets underway at 12 noon on Saturday, as the No. 3-seeded Hurricane play No. 2-seeded Utah at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Utes (2-0) head into the weekend with plenty of rest, following wins over Idaho and Weber State on January 16.
Depending on the outcome, Tulsa will take on one of two Big Ten foes - No. 4-seeded Purdue or top-seeded and sixth-ranked Ohio State. The consolation match will take place at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday, followed by the championship match at 12 noon CT. The winning team will earn an automatic bid to the National Team Indoor Championship, hosted by Wisconsin in February.
In 2015, the 41st-ranked Golden Hurricane defeated the 47th-ranked Boilermakers, 4-0. Purdue stands at 1-2 in 2020.
The Buckeyes (4-0) had a strong fall season, as No. 2 doubles tandem John McNally and Robert Cash finished runner-up at the 2019 ITA National Fall Championships in California. They currently have four individual players ranked in the Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Fall Rankings - No. 16 Cannon Kingsley, No. 24 John McNally, No. 28 Kyle Seelig, and No. 40 James Trotter.
Tulsa's Kody Pearson ranks 98th in the ITA singles rankings, and currently has six wins against opponents ranked in the top 60. On Tuesday, the sophomore was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
The last time TU participated in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend was in 2018, as the Golden Hurricane again played in the Buckeye State. Tulsa fell to North Florida 4-3, but was able to rebound with a 4-3 defeat of Yale the following day.
