The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 57-38 decision to SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-14 on the season and 1-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Morgan Brady and KK Rodriguez both had a team-leading 10 points, while Kendrian Elliott added six points and team-bests of five rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Rodriguez's points were a career-high, while Elliott's steals also set a career-best.
Elliott's three blocks moved her into seventh place on the school record list with 82 in her career.
SMU entered the game scoring the fewest three-pointers in the NCAA with just 37 on the season, and were second to last in fewest per game (2.2) and in three-point shooting percentage (21.6). The Mustangs' Ariana Whitfield bested her season total (4) with five three pointers made in the contest, while the team shot 40-percent from behind the arc.
SMU jumped out to a 10-2 lead over Tulsa with 5:03 on the clock in the first quarter, and owned a 16-5 advantage at the end of the frame. TU shot just 16-percent in the first 10 minutes compared to the Mustangs' 50-percent. With just 25 seconds remaining in the period, Alexis Gaulden went down with an ankle injury and would not return to the game.
SMU outscored the Hurricane, 19-8, in the second quarter for a 35-13 lead at halftime. Tulsa was just 1-of-8 in the second frame for 12-percent, while the Mustangs were 7-of-16 for 43-percent.
The Golden Hurricane nearly doubled their score in the third quarter with 11 points, but trailed SMU, 49-24 with one frame to play. Tulsa then outscored the Mustangs, 14-8, in the final quarter, but couldn't overcome their first half deficit for the final 19-point decision.
The Mustangs were led by Whitfield with 23 points, while Johnasia Cash added 12 points. Paige Bayliss pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Tulsa shot just 22-percent from the field, 16-percent from behind the arc and 69-percent from the free throw line, while SMU was 33-percent from the field, 40-percent from three-point range and 68-percent from the line.
SMU had a 48-31 lead in rebounds, a 15-5 advantage in assists and an 11-7 lead in steals, while Tulsa had a 6-4 edge in blocks.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, January 29 against Tulane beginning at 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
