Kendrian Elliott, Rebecca Lescay and Maddie Bittle all scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 74-65 overtime decision to Temple on Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-9 on the season and 0-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls moved to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Elliott recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 13th of her career as she finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Elliott, however, only played 28 minutes, including just eight in the second half and overtime, when her season average is 35, due to foul trouble. All of her points came in the first half, while she had seven rebounds at halftime.

"We didn't have Kendrian on the court for much of the game, and she is someone we are used to having out there for 40 minutes," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "We played 45 tonight so that was a lot of time without her on the floor.  We have to have someone else step up that can be a percentage shooter for us.  Rebecca did a much better job tonight of following through on her shots and making some buckets, and she picked up some of the slack.  We didn't shoot 40-percent as a team, and if we don't shoot 40-percent it is hard for us to win.  I am really proud of the way our team fought and competed.  We were in it every step of the way."

Lescay added 14 points, while Bittle scored 11, and Alexis Gaulden added eight points, eight assists and four steals.

The biggest shooting discrepancy came at the free throw line as Tulsa was 8-of-11 for 72-percent, while Temple was 16-of-27 for 59-percent, giving the Owls twice as many points at the line and nearly 2.5 times as many attempts.

Tulsa shot 37-percent from the field and 36-percent from three-point range, while Temple shot 43-percent from the field and 29-percent from behind the arc.

Temple jumped out to a 9-3 lead at the 6:20 mark of the first frame, but Tulsa went on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 11-11 with 3:55 left in the quarter.  The Golden Hurricane then climbed to a 15-11 advantage at the end of the frame.

The Owls started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 20-15 lead, before Elliott scored on a layup at the 7:01 mark.  Elliott's basket sparked a 9-3 Golden Hurricane run for a 24-23 Tulsa lead with 4:34 remaining in the quarter.  The score was tied at 27-27 at the 2:13 mark, but Tulsa had a 5-0 run to close out the frame with a 32-27 advantage.

Temple once again started the frame with a run, this time an 11-3 run in the third quarter, to give the Owls a 38-35 advantage at the 4:56 mark.  The two teams ended the frame tied, 41-41.

In the final quarter, Temple started the frame with an 11-4 run for a 52-45 advantage with 6:50 remaining in the contest.  The Hurricane battled back to pull within two, 52-50, at the 5:06 mark, and then tied the game at 55-55 at the 2:01 mark.

A free throw made by Marissa Mackins at the 1:44 mark gave Temple a 56-55 lead, but a layup by Lescay with 1:34 remaining put Tulsa up by one, 57-56.  Gaulden made a free throw with 22 seconds to play, but a made layup by Mackins tied the score once again at 58-58 with 15 second remaining.  Mackins then hit two free throws with 12.8 seconds on the clock and then Gaulden scored on a layup with 6.5 seconds to play for a 60-60 score.  Neither team scored in the final seconds to force overtime.

The overtime period started the same as the first four in regulation, with a scoring run by the Owls.  Temple started the overtime frame with a 9-3 run for a 69-63 lead at the 1:55 mark, and then closed out the game with a 5-2 scoring advantage for the nine-point win.

Mackins finished with 25 points, while Mia Davis added 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Lena Niang had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Temple had a 48-35 advantage in rebounds, a 17-15 edge in assists and a 4-1 lead in blocks, while Tulsa had an 11-5 lead in steals.

Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, January 8 at Tulane.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Devlin Fieldhouse in New Orleans, La.
