TULSA, Okla. –– Len Morton, the man who coined the nickname "Bingo" for Tulsa All-America basketball player Bobby "Bingo" Smith and called the action of Heisman Trophy runners-up Jerry Rhome and Howard Twilley in the 1960s, passed away on Monday in Tulsa.
Morton was Tulsa's radio play-by-play voice for football, basketball and baseball from 1959-71. He served as Tulsa's director of athletic promotions in the mid 1970s as well. Morton later worked as a sales representative at Tulsa Cable for more than 25 years.
The sports director for KVOO /Channel 2, Morton began broadcasting TU football games in 1959. He also was the play-by-play voice for the Tulsa Oilers minor league baseball team from 1959-73.
A University of Oklahoma graduate, Morton once said this about the hometown Hurricane "It's easy to tell I'm pulling for TU, but we always try our best to give an unbiased report. You just can't help but pull for Tulsa when you've been associated with its teams for so many years."
Morton was honored with the TU Athletic Hall of Fame Order of Merit Award in 2017 for his service to TU athletics.
