STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the first time since 2002, the Golden Hurricane starts the season 6-0 after winning the opening games of the Bulldog Kickoff Classic. Tulsa defeated Tennessee State to begin the tournament 2-0, before defeating the host school, Mississippi State 2-1.

The Hurricane picked up its sixth win of the season by leaning on the strong pitching staff. Up 2-1 in the 5th inning against the Bulldogs, Kassidy Scott relieved Chenise Delce, throwing the last 2.1 innings not allowing a hit to defeat RV Mississippi State.

Freshman Sarah Llamas-Howell recorded her first win as a Hurricane in her first career start against Tennessee State going 4.2 innings before being relieved by Samantha Pochop who secured her second save of the season.

The Hurricane used opportune hitting during the two games scoring 4 runs on 10 hits. Against Tennessee State, Mikayla Whitten's double drove in a run to make a 2-0 game in the bottom of the 6th. Tulsa used a sacrifice fly by Alexis Perry and a wild pitch to score 2 runs in the top of the 3rd against Mississippi State.

Game One (Tulsa 2, Tennessee State 0)
Tulsa continued their consistent pitching, only allowing three hits in the matchup against the Tigers. Llamas-Howell made her second appearance in a Hurricane uniform facing 18 batters allowing only 2 hits. Pochop struck out 4 in her 2.1 innings of work giving up just one hit on her way to her second save of the season.

With one out in the bottom of the 4th, Aubree Seaney doubled down the left field line. Haley Morgan pinch ran for Seaney, scoring on a Tigers' error as the Hurricane took a 1-0 lead. Sarah Briers continued the inning with a single and stolen base, but Tulsa ended the inning on a pop out to third base.

A walk by Delce started the 6th inning, as Kyndal Pirtle came in to run for the designated player. Pirtle stole second, giving her the first steal as a Tulsa player. With two outs in the inning, Whitten drove a double to left field scoring Pirtle giving Tulsa the 2-0 advantage.

Tennessee State (1-5) put a runner on first with a single in the final inning, and the Tigers moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pochop ended the game striking out the final Tigers batter giving the Hurricane its 5th win of the season.

Game Two (Tulsa 2, Mississippi State 1)
Chenise Delce (2-0) took the circle in the second game and picked up the win in her third outing of the season, throwing 4.2 innings, striking out one and giving up just one run.

Senior Kassidy Scott entered after the Bulldogs scored their only run of the game on a home run in the 5th inning. Scott made quick work of the 9 batters she faced,  not allowing a hit in her 2.1 innings of work. Scott struck out the last Bulldog batter to secure the victory for the Hurricane, giving the Bulldogs (5-1) their first loss of the season.

Makayla Jackson started the 3rd inning with a single through the left side, being pinch ran for by Grace Jarvis. Kylie Norwood followed up with a single putting a runner on first and second. Two batters later, Delce singled through the left side loading the bases for Alexis Perry. Perry's sacrifice fly and a wild pitch scored two batters to give Tulsa the early 2-0 lead.

Jackson started the game as the designated player, leading the Hurricane from the plate, hitting a perfect 2-2 in the game. With Perry's sacrifice fly she recorded her 10th RBI of the season, as she leads the American Athletic Conference in RBIs per game with 1.7 per contest.
