BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -Â Patrick Dever won the 3,000-meter finals, joining Scott Beattie and Cameron Field in earning All-Conference honors on day two of the 2020 American Indoor Track and Field Championships. The conference meet took place at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Tulsa men finished in fourth place out of eight teams with 79 points. It marks the program's highest finish at the American Indoor Championships since the 2017 campaign. Houston ran away with its sixth straight men's championship with 179 points. Connecticut finished second with 129 points, followed by Cincinnati with 101 for third. Wichita State rounded out the top five with 59 points.
On the women's side, the Golden Hurricane finished in a tie for 11th place with USF, scoring 31 points. Houston won its second consecutive American Indoor Track and Field title with 84 points, edging out Cincinnati by just five-tenths of a point. Temple took third with 71 points, followed by SMU (60.5) and Wichita State (59 points) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
"The men had a good meet," Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "They really stepped it up over the second day in the mile and 3,000m. But we also had some things not go our way. We had a baton knocked out. But for the most part, [the men] performed well with the number of competitors we took to the meet. On the women's side, we don't have the number to compete in the conference right now. But from what we did have, we got points out of [events]. We still had a [top finishers], and that meant a lot. I was really proud of a couple performances on the second day. The women's mile really stepped up, improving their times on the season. So there was a lot of positives, but we gotta get a little bit better with the conference getting better too."
Dever bested his personal-best time in the 3,000-meter run by six seconds, as he crossed the finish line at 8:03.10. He leaves the weekend having earned All-Conference accolades in two events. His time stands currently stands as the fifth-best time by a Hurricane in the event during indoor competition at TU. It also marks the fourth consecutive year a Hurricane has won the event. TU alum Marc Scott won the award in 2017, while fellow alum Ben Preisner took gold at the last two indoor conference championships.
Beattie captured third place finishes in both the mile run and the 3,000-meter run. In the mile run, he finished to a time of 4:12.41, while finishing the 3,000m in 8:09.41, a personal-best. The redshirt sophomore has earned All-Conference honors in two events at the last two American indoor meets. That includes back-to-back top-three finishes in the 3,000m finals.
Field was the final Hurricane to receive All-Conference recognition with a second place finish in the mile run. He cut exactly four seconds off his time in Friday's prelims, as he crossed the finish line at 4:11.55.
A total of six Hurricane men set new PR's in their runs. Joining Dever and Beattie in the 3,000-meter finals was Isaac Akers, who cut nearly 10 seconds off his previous time to take fourth at 8:19.52. Christian Baker finished to a time of 8:36.82. Baker nearly finished in the top three of the mile run, as he was four-tenths of a second behind Beattie. Pete Johnson crossed the finish line at 8:51.91, a personal-best.
On the women's side, three Hurricane shattered their previous times in the 3,000-meter run. Caroline Miller ran to a time of 9:45.83, trimming .19 seconds off her previous PR time. Ashley Barnes cut over three seconds off her time entering the event, as she posted a time of 9:47.56 for 12th. Alice Newcombe was the final Hurricane to register a new personal-best, as she bested her previous time by over 10 seconds at 9:54.93.
Coach Gulley's bunch will now wait and see if any Hurricane qualify for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, beginning Friday, March 13. Tulsa is scheduled to open outdoor competition at the ORU Invitational. The two-day invite is set to start on Friday, March 27, at the ONEOK Sports Complex on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
