Tulsa Starts Softball Season 2-0 at Mercer Invitational

MACON, Ga. — The University of Tulsa softball team began the 2020 season capturing victories over Tennessee Tech (10-2, 5 innings) and Eastern Kentucky (5-2) to give first-year head coach Crissy Strimple her first career wins.
The Hurricane picked up its first wins of the season by swinging the bat well on the day recording 21 hits and 15 runs. Against Tennessee Tech, sophomore Aubree Seaney led the way for Tulsa with 2 hits for 4 RBIs, including a two-run home run. In the game against EKU, Chenise Delce picked up where she left off last season recording 2 hits, a double and a home run, driving in 2 runs.
The veteran pitching staff that returned for Tulsa was on point in today's games. Senior Kassidy Scott took the circle in the first game throwing 5 innings and allowing only 3 hits and striking out 4. Delce started the second game for the Hurricane going 6.2 innings and striking out 6, while Samantha Pochop picked up the save.
TU will return to the diamond tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2:45 p.m. (CT) to face the host team, Mercer, with a second game against Eastern Kentucky scheduled for 7:15 p.m. (CT).
Game One (Tulsa 10, Tennessee Tech 2)
Tulsa came out of the gate swinging against Tennessee Tech as three Hurricane players hit home runs to run-rule the Golden Eagles, 10-2, for the first win of the season.
Tulsa jumped on Tech early with 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Haley Morgan gave the Hurricane the lead-off base runner as she was a victim of a hit-by-pitch, Kylie Norwood singled and then Chenise Delce loaded the bases with a single to left field. Alexis Perry singled to center, scoring Morgan for the first Tulsa run. After a pop-up gave Tulsa its first out, Mikayla Whitten singled to right center, scoring Norwood for a 2-0 lead. Tajiah Ellison reached on a fielder's choice, but Delce was out at home plate for the second out of the inning.
Seany, batting 8th in the lineup, singled in two runs as Whitten and Perry each scored to give Tulsa a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Tulsa added 3 runs in the 3rd inning as Sarah Briers homered to left field to score Perry after an inning-opening single. Morgan added an RBI when she singled in Whitten, who reached on a double after the Briers home run.
The Hurricane came back with one run in the 4th on an inning-opening homer by Delce and added 2 runs in the 5th as Seany hit a 2-run shot over the over the right field fence, scoring Ellison.
For the game, Delce, Perry, Whitten and Seaney each had 2 hits, while Seany drove in 4 runs to lead the Hurricane. On the mound, Kassidy Scott did not allow a hit for the first 3.2 innings of the game and allowed just 2 runs en route to the win.
For the Golden Eagles (0-1), Haeli Bryson took the loss after she allowed 8 earned runs over 4.0 innings. Callie Piper relieved Bryson in the 5th inning but gave up the 2-run home run to Seany that ended the game.
Game Two (Tulsa 5, Eastern Kentucky 2)
Reigning Rookie of the Year in the American Athletic Conference, Chenise Delce took the circle in the second game and picked up the win in her first outing of the season, throwing 6.2 innings and striking out 6.
The sophomore scattered five hits and three walks en route to the win. Junior Samantha Pochop came in to close the game with a runner in scoring position. She forced the Colonels to fly out to center field for the save.
Tulsa scored one run in the first inning on the first of 2 Alexis Perry RBIs, and after Eastern Kentucky tied it at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd, the Hurricane went ahead 2-1 in the 3rd on a Perry single that scored Kylie Norwood, who reached base on an earlier single to the pitcher.
Norwood went 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs for the Hurricane. Delce, for the second straight game, hit a home run with a 2-run shot in the 5th inning to give Tulsa a 4-1 lead. Freshman Abby Jones recorded her first career hit, a double, driving in an RBI in the 6th inning to extend the Hurricane lead to 5-2.

Tulsa continues play on Saturday at the Mercer Invitational with a match-up against the home team at 2:45 p.m. (CT), followed by a nightcap against Eastern Kentucky at 7:15 p.m.
