Tulsa sophomore rowers Johanna Kristof and Madlen Markova are set to compete at the European Rowing U23 Championships in Duisburg, Germany, in the Women's Single event on Saturday, September 5.
"I am incredibly proud of these two for being able to train and race with their countries," Tulsa Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "They have been an inspiration to our whole team. They haven't even been on the team a year, but have both been great assets and teammates. Their year has been crazy as they both arrived in January, we had our first scrimmage in March, and then a week later they had to head home because of the pandemic. Our whole team is jealous of the fact that they get to race each other and represent us all. Since they are racing each other in the single, all I can say is Go Tulsa!"
"My whole return to Bulgaria turned into a bigger trip because of COVID," Madlen said. "My participation in the European Championship for Bulgaria is something I have been waiting for for a long time and I feel quite excited about it. There were a lot of obstacles in my sports training because of the virus. It was very difficult because it is a little difficult to do anything in an apartment, but I succeeded. I love my home, but I can't wait to go back to Tulsa."
"To be back at racing feels good," Kristof said. "It was hard this year because I didn't have many races. In Austria, we had two races, but that is nothing compared to racing internationally. It is the only chance this year to represent Austria for me. I look forward to coming back to Tulsa hopefully in January, but the chance to race against a teammate is exciting."
