Tulsa rowing added Ashley Johnson and Anna Shaw to the 2021-22 signing class, as announced today by head rowing coach Kevin Harris.
Â
"We are very pleased that both of these women chose Tulsa for Fall of 2021," Harris said. "To say that recruiting during a pandemic has been challenging is an understatement. Both of these women really worked hard to learn about Tulsa and why it would be a good fit for them. That certainly helped us all as we looked to recruit a great incoming class of for Fall 2021."
Â
Johnson, a 5-9 rower from Evans, Ga., was a two-year letterwinner in rowing at Augusta Preparatory Day School. Johnson is primarily a sculler and has competed as a novice rower in a 2020 COVID restricted year, competing at the Secret City Head Race. She also lettered in both track and basketball for three years at APDS. As a sophomore, she helped her high school claim the state track championship with her ninth-overall finish in discus.
Â
"Ashley is going to be a tremendous addition to our program," Harris said. "She has good body awareness from her time in track and field and basketball. What was very obvious from her videos is that she works hard and loves to compete. She also has a great coach in Brad Holdren who highly recommended her.  It was obvious to me from our first phone call that she would be a good fit at Tulsa, and I am looking forward to watching her develop as a rower over these next four years."
Â
A 5-11 rower from Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom, Shaw has rowed for both the Newark Rowing Club and Nottingham County Rowing Association. Shaw competed at the 2019 and 2020 Junior British Championship in the J16 4+ event, and qualified for the Henley Women's Regatta in the same event where she helped her crew advance to the quarterfinals. Shaw claimed a top mark in the Women's Single at the Ancholme, and first-place finishes in the 4x at the Lincoln Head and Lucas Fettes Peterborough regattas.
Â
"Anna was a fantastic find by our recruiting coordinator, Kerry Hassall," Harris said. "We had certainly seen her crew at the 2019 Women's Henley and were on the lookout for her. She's rowed in a lot of great races and is getting better as a rower all the time. Anna's UK coaches, Dec Gamble and Adam Stancer, were both really enthusiastic about her current ability and future potential. Once we had our recruiting conversations with her and her family there were no doubts. She is going to fit in well at Tulsa and help our team to be better moving forward."
