Tulsa Rowers Face Tough Competition at Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational

3/13/2021 6:14:00 PM | Rowing

The Tulsa rowing team returned to action for the first time in over a year and faced stiff competition including #16 Alabama, Minnesota and Tennessee which are both receiving votes, and Clemson in the first day of racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

"I am really grateful to our team and all the teams here that have done what it takes to be racing again," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "A year ago we were all on our campuses trying to figure out the shape of the world and the fact that Louisville can pull off a successful regatta amid all the covid restrictions is really a beautiful thing to see."

"I think we rowed really well today.  We had some weather issues back at home with the cold front and all the issues that it caused, but the women, even with the lack of water time, handled it well.  It was a pleasure to watch them get after it today and enjoy what they were doing.  We have a lot to work on but it is our first race and I am pleased with our aggressiveness and attitude."

The Golden Hurricane faced #16 Alabama and Minnesota in the morning races.  The Crimson Tide picked up first-place marks in all four events, but TU earned second-place finishes in three of the races.

The closest race of the morning came in the 2nd Varsity 8+ event, as Alabama crossed the finish line in a time of 6:28.553, while TU was just 2.708 seconds behind in a time of 6:31.261 and Minnesota recorded a time of 6:34.506.

In the Varsity 8+ race, Alabama posted a time of 6:17.224, followed by Tulsa (6:24.687) and Minnesota (6:27.211).  The trio finished in the same order in the 2nd Varsity 4+ event, with times of 7:01.642, 7:26.171 and 7:30.037, respectively.

Alabama tallied a time of 7:06.891 for first place in the Varsity 4+, while Minnesota was second in a time of 7:22.426 and Tulsa was third with a time of 7:26.132.

In the afternoon, Tulsa faced Tennessee and Clemson.  Tennessee claimed first-place marks in every race, but TU and Clemson split second-place marks.

In the Varsity 8+, Tulsa posted a time of 6:22.423, just shy of four seconds behind the Volunteers, while Clemson was seven seconds behind the Hurricane.

TU also claimed a second-place time of 7:32.533 in the 2nd Varsity 4+, while Tulsa was third in the 2nd Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races.

"I am really proud of our coxswains.  They are an exceptional group of young women.  I am just really proud of them for stepping up and getting us down the course like they did.  I'm impressed with their intelligence and leadership, and I think it will help us out toward the end of season."

Tulsa will race Notre Dame and #12 Wisconsin on Sunday morning in the final day of the regatta.
