Tulsa Sweeps Doubleheader from New Mexico

GAME 1 BOX GAME 2 BOX  I  SEASON STATS

TULSA, Okla. ––
The Tulsa softball team opened the home season with two wins Friday over the New Mexico Lobos on the first day of the TU-OSU Invitational. The Hurricane scored 7-0 and 3-2 victories at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
 
Tulsa jumped out to early leads in both games, taking a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning of Game 1 and the same 2-run lead in the 2nd inning of the nightcap.
 
In the first game, Tulsa amassed its 7 runs on 15 hits with Kylie Norwood tallying a career-high 5 hits. The Hurricane scored 2 runs in the opening inning and splurged for 4 runs on 5 hits in the 5th inning. Chenise Delce was dominant on the mound for the Hurricane, pitching 6 innings and allowing just 4 hits with 10 strikeouts.
 
Hits didn't come as easy in the second game of the doubleheader for the Hurricane. Tulsa scattered 7 hits and scored 3 runs to hold off the Lobos in the second game. Trailing 3-0, New Mexico scored its first runs of the day in the 6th inning to make the score 3-2 and after getting the leadoff runner on in the 7th, Tulsa's Sara Llamas-Howell came on in relief for the save as she retired all three batters faced.
 
Aubrey Seaney was the offensive star for the Hurricane in the nightcap with 2 hits and 2 RBI.
 
Tulsa improved its season record to 2-3, while New Mexico fell to 1-12.
 
Tulsa will continue play in the TU-OSU Invitational tomorrow as the Hurricane hosts Omaha in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and will conclude the tournament at Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon with one game.
 
 
GAME 1
Tulsa jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and added 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th for its first win of the season with a 7-0 shutout over the Lobos.
 
Kylie Norwood ended the opener with a career-high 5 hits, while Chenise Delce pitched her eighth career shutout with 10 strikeouts. Imani Edwards, Rylee Keith, Sarah Briers and Kyndal Pirtle added 2 hits apiece for the Hurricane, while Haley Morgan had 2 RBI to lead Tulsa.
 
Norwood opened the game with a single through the right side and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the first inning. Alexis Perry, who reached first on a fielder's choice, scored an unearned run on another fielder's choice to put the Hurricane ahead 2-0 after one inning.
 
Aubrey Seaney started the second with a double to left field and scored on Kylie Norwood's second single in as many bats to take a 3-0 lead at the bottom of 2 innings.
 
The Hurricane added 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning on 5 hits to take a 7-0 lead. Tulsa was looking for more, but left the bases loaded.

GAME 2
Sara Howell-Llamas came on in the 7th inning in relief and retired the three batters she faced to earn the save in a 3-2 Tulsa win over the Lobos.
 
The Hurricane struck first with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning and their run in the 5th inning gave the home team a 3-0 lead going into the 6th, and that's where the visiting Lobos did their damage by scoring 2 runs.
 
Llamas -Howell took the mound after UNM put on a baserunner in the top of the 7th and put three batters down in order.
 
In the 2nd, Haley Morgan was hit-by-pitch to start the inning and scored on Aubrey Seaney's double to left center field. Tajiah Ellison's single up the middle scored Seaney for Tulsa's 2-0 lead. The Lobos appeared to have responded with a run in the top of the 3rd, but on an appeal the runner was ruled to have left third base early for the second out.
 
Tulsa kept the Lobos off the scoreboard for the next two innings.
 
Seaney's 2-out triple in the 5th inning scored Haley Morgan to give the Hurricane a 3-0 lead. The Lobos put its first two batters on base in the top of the 6th and ended the inning with its two runs while stranding two baserunners.
 
Tulsa's Samantha Pochop struck out 9 and allowed 4 hits thru the first 5 innings and was relieved by Kylee Nash in the 6th before Llamas-Howell took over to shut down the Lobos in the final inning.
