In her second day on the job, first-year Head Coach Angie Nelp announced today the signing of the top prep senior in the metro area as Temira (tuh-my-ruh) Poindexter joined the Golden Hurricane women's basketball program.
Poindexter, a 6'1" forward, was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Sapulpa High School and completed her career as a state champion.
As a senior, Poindexter averaged 20.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 steals, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range. Poindexter earned Oklahoma Coaches Association (OCA) and Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association all-state honors her senior season. An all-conference selection, she was named the Frontier Valley Conference Player of the Year after leading the Chieftains to a 19-3 record.
"I appreciate the work the previous staff did in recruiting Temira," Nelp said. "Temira is an extremely versatile player at 6'1". She scored with great efficiency highlighted by her ability to stretch the defense with her 3-point prowess. Beyond her basketball skills, Temira is a winner. She is a state champion and brings that winning mentality with her as she joins Tulsa women's basketball."
Poindexter led her prep team to the 2021 Class 5A state championship when she averaged 22.3 points in three tournament games. She scored 28 points in a semifinal win over Piedmont and totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals in a 58-49 victory over Tahlequah in the championship game en route to being named the Tournament MVP.
In her junior season, Poindexter averaged 17.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in helping lead the Chieftains to a 23-4 record and a state tournament berth. She was named the Frontier Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and was the Frontier Valley Freshman of the Year in her rookie season.
"Temira is a great kid that comes from a great family," Sapulpa High School Head Coach Darlean Calip said. "As a senior she grew tremendously as a player and a leader. She is phenomenal in the locker room, is a tall kid that can shoot the three and score from all levels, which makes her versatile and hard to defend. Temira is a well-rounded, silly kid who loves to have fun, spend time with her teammates and help the younger players on and off the court."
Poindexter's signing gives Tulsa three newcomers for the 2021-22 season.
