Tulsa Advances to AAC Semifinals with 8-2 Win Over Houston

TULSA, Okla. –– Sarah Briers three-run shot over the left field fence blew open the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as the 4th-seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane advanced to the American Athletic Conference semifinals with an 8-2 win over Houston Thursday night at the Collins Family Softball Complex.

Briers ended the game with three RBIs on two hits and scored two runs of her own, while Chenise Delce pitched five innings and gave up just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Kassidy Scott came in for the final two innings and put down all six batters she faced.

Delce also had two hits and two RBIs, while Alexis Perry added two hits and scored two runs.

Tulsa will face the No. 1-seed Wichita State Shockers on Friday with a 6 p.m. start time. In the other semifinal, USF will face UCF in a 3 p.m. contest.

The Hurricane scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead over the Cougars and added a run in the sixth for its six-run victory.

Haley Morgan began the 5th with a walk and advanced to 3rd base on a single by Perry. Morgan scored on a Delce single. Imani Edwards reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Perry, while Briers brought in Kennedy Cramer, running for Delce, and Edwards with her first round-tripper of the season and fourth of her career.

Houston's Bethany Busch took one deep in the top of the sixth, while Tulsa's Perry hit her 10th home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning to put the Hurricane its final margin of victory.

Tulsa put the first run across the plate in the bottom of the first inning when Delce's short popup to center field scored Haley Morgan, who got on base with a walk and made it to third on a steal and a wild pitch.

The Cougars knotted the score in the top of the second as Aspen Howie sailed one over the left field fence. The Hurricane responded in its half of the inning when Tajiah Ellison's single to left field scored Briers from second base for a 2-1 lead, but two runners were left on base.

Tulsa left a runner on in each of the next two innings as the score remained 2-1 heading into the fifth inning until Tulsa's scoring barrage in the bottom of the inning gave the Hurricane a six-run cushion.
