Tulsa Varsity 8+ Earns Bronze Medal; Golden Hurricane Finishes Third at The American Championship

Tulsa's Varsity 8+ earned a bronze medal while the team finished third at the at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Rowing Championship on Sunday morning on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

"First of all I'm grateful for the ability to race at all," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "This year has been hard on all the teams.  A big thank you to the Oak Ridge Rowing Association and the American Athletic Conference for putting on the regatta, I know we are all appreciative of their hard work."

"I'm very proud of this team.  The results aren't quite what we had hoped, but the performances and the execution of what we had planned was good.  For what we've been able to accomplish with our practices and training this year has been great.  Congratulations to all of our student-athletes.  I'm really pleased with the way they carried themselves and competed today."

Chloe Henderson, Madlen Markova, Sarolta Papp, Karen Undset, Bobbi Forster, Becky Coleman, Suzannah Hornett, Johanna Kristof and Nicole Workman earned a bronze medal in the Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:39.891.  TU trailed SMU (6:35.916) and UCF (6:38.555), but topped Sacramento State (6:45.997) and Temple (6:56.152).

For their efforts, Markova was named to the American Athletic Conference all-conference first team, while Hornett, Kristof and Henderson were tabbed to the second team.

"I am really proud of the way the Varsity 8+ raced," Harris said.  "In the six years we've been in the conference I don't think we've ever beat UCF in the Varsity 8+ and we came close today.  The way they raced down the course and earned that third-place finish kept us in the top three as a team.  It was a good sign to see them really go after that race and I don' think they could have raced it any better."

In the 2nd Varsity 8+, Isabel Stutte, Julia Olawumi, Ivanina Petrova, Meredith Galloway, Katherine Stenning, Bass Andre, Helena Gutzmer, Millie Brice and Ella Stanhope claimed a fourth-place of time of 6:58.907.  SMU (6:37.136), UCF (6:42.962) and Sacramento State (6:54.066) took the top three spots, while Temple was fifth (7:00.568).

Isabella Musollino, Ermioni Lamprianidou, Robine Van Doorn, Chloe Wild and Gabrielle Cook raced the Varsity 4+ to a fourth-place time of 7:41.699.  The Golden Hurricane trailed SMU (7:27.420), UCF (7:31.773) and Sacramento State (7:37.781), but topped Temple (7:51.432).

In the 2nd Varsity 4+, Mary Birthisel, Kyra VanderWeele, Kelsey Viane, Julianna Lynch and Cloee Graham turned in a time of 8:15.547 to finish fourth.  SMU (7:38.019), UCF (7:38.283) and Temple (7:50.737) took the top three spots.
