Alex Meinhard had two goals, while Malik Henry-Scott, Marcos Moreno and Takayoshi Wyatt each added a score to give the #24 Tulsa men's soccer team a 5-1 win over Michigan State on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-0 on the season, while the Spartans fell to 2-3 overall. The win was the Tulsa men's soccer teams 100th win at the Hurricane Stadium.
"We knew it was a big game obviously playing against a team from the Big Ten," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "It was important that we try to finish off the non-conference 5-0, so it was important that we got this result. We scored some good goals and took advantage of our chances. Overall I was pleased with our performance, but we can get better, learn and keep maturing."
Meinhard put Tulsa on the board with just 3:22 ticked off the clock as he dribbled around multiple defenders and shot from 12 yards out from left to right for the score. Just under six minutes later Henry-Scott drilled in a shot from eight yards out off a through ball by Ben Barkley to put TU up 2-0.
Luke Morrell got one back for the Spartans as he headed in a corner kick taken by Jack Beck. Morrell scored from a yard out at the far post.
Meinhard punched in a penalty kick in the 32nd minute for his second score of the game. TU was awarded the penalty kick after Henry-Scott was brought down on a breakaway in the box.
Wyatt scored his first Golden Hurricane goal at the 39:58 mark. Henry Sach headed the ball, which bounced off Til Zinnhardt's back and at the feet of Wyatt who one-timed the ball into the back of the net from six yards out. Tulsa took a 4-1 advantage into halftime.
Moreno netted his second career goal as he scored from 12 yards out off a combination from Henry-Scott and Barkley at the 82:10 mark.
Tulsa had a 15-8 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, while Michigan State had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Meinhard had a team-best four shots, while Wyatt added three attempts, Barkley had two and six others had one shot. Alex Lopez logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up three saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, September 18 against USF beginning at 11:00 am Central in Tampa, Fla.
