The #9 Tulsa men's soccer team recorded a commanding 5-2 win over USF on Saturday afternoon at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Golden Hurricane moved to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls fell to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The 6-0 start on the season ties the program-best which was set in 2010.
"I thought we started the game well," Tulsa Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Our ball movement was good and we created three really good chances to start the game. Overall it was a pretty solid performance, but the biggest strength today was our depth. We had 17 players play 30 or more minutes. It is very hot and humid today in Tampa so we had to utilize our depth and everyone that came in off the bench played exceptionally well, including three of our five goal scorers. It was a good, solid team performance and I'm proud of our guys, but we can continue to get better as a team."
Ben Barkley was taken down inside the box at the 4:04 mark to set up a penalty kick that Alex Meinhard drilled up the middle to put Tulsa on the board. Barkley and Meinhard then assisted on Malik Henry-Scott's goal in the 21st minute to give TU a 2-0 advantage.
Gabrielle Privitera got one back for the Bulls at the 33:05 mark, but Takayoshi Wyatt put Tulsa back up by two as he one-timed the ball into the back off the net off a cross from Austen Schweinert for a 3-1 score heading into the break.
Privitera scored his second goal of the contest for USF at the 60:21 mark, but just 25 seconds later Schweinert earned his first goal of the season off a pass from Luke Jeffus. Isaiah Quarcoo then put Tulsa up 5-2 as he drilled in his first collegiate goal and the final score of the contest at the 80:12 mark.
USF had a 12-11 lead in shots, but it was the Golden Hurricane that had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams had four corner kicks.
Barkley had a team-best three shots, while eight others had one attempt including all five players who scored a goal.
Tulsa returns to action on Friday, September 24 at Memphis beginning at 7:00 pm.
