Four players scored in double figures for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as TU dropped a 66-60 decision to Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Golden Hurricane fell to 13-4 on the season and 3-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bearcats moved to 10-10 overall and 3-5 in the league.
"I was really pleased with the first half," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "Our defense was good, but then going into the third quarter it was tough. Cincinnati got too many points in the paint so we tried to shift up our defense, but we let their defense affect us offensively. I'm excited to get back to Tulsa, review the film and grow from this."
Wyvette Mayberry scored a team-best 16 points, including four trey's, while Rebecca Lescay added 12 points, Maddie Bittle had 11 and Maya Mayberry posted 10. Lescay pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Temira Poindexter had seven rebounds and team-bests of six blocks and five assists. Wyvette Mayberry had four steals in the contest.
Tulsa shot 40-percent from the field, 33-percent from behind the arc and 66-percent from the free throw line, while Cincinnati shot 44-percent from the field, 40-percent from three-point range and 80-percent from the line.
Tulsa had a 7-4 advantage in steals, while Cincinnati had a 38-33 lead in rebounds. Both teams had 15 assists and six blocks.
The Bearcats had a 38-26 lead in points in the paint, a 21-9 lead in points off turnovers, a 13-8 edge in fast break points and a 22-4 lead in points off the bench.
Tulsa jumped out to a 13-4 lead at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter, but the Bearcats battled back to pull within three, 13-10, with just 2:14 on the clock. Maya Mayberry hit two free throws for a 15-10 Golden Hurricane advantage at the end of the frame.
TU outscored UC, 16-2, including a 13-0 run, to take a 21-point lead (33-12) at the 3:31 mark of the 2nd quarter. Arame Niang snapped a 5:46 scoring drought by the Bearcats with a layup at the 3:05 mark as Cincinnati outscored Tulsa, 8-3, to close out the quarter with TU owning a 36-20 lead.
The Bearcats started the third quarter with a 20-5 scoring advantage to pull to within one, 41-40, at the 4:16 mark. UC then tied the game at 45-all, the first tied score of game, with just 2:13 remaining in the quarter, and then took their first lead of the contest on a free throw made by Jillian Hayes with 1:17 to play (46-45). The Bearcats owned a one-point lead, 48-47, with one quarter to play.
There were six lead changes in the first 4:10 off the clock in the fourth quarter, including five one-point leads by either team. UC went up three, 57-54, but a three-pointer by Wyvette Mayberry tied the game with 2:35 left to play. Braylyn Milton responded with a trey of her own, but the younger Mayberry hit another three to tie it at 60-60 with 1:51 remaining.
A layup by Hayes with just 1:30 on the clock put the Bearcats up once again, and then a jumper by Milton and a layup by Jada Scott with just 11.2 seconds remaining gave UC a 66-60 lead for the final score. TU missed their last four attempts, all of which were three-pointers, while shooting just 27-percent from the field in the final frame.
Cincinnati was led by Niang with 18 points, while Hayes added 14 points, Caitlyn Wilson had 13 and Milton posted 11. Hayes had a double-double with a team-best 11 rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, February 2 against Houston beginning at 6:30 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
