BROKEN ARROW, Okla. –– With the tournament namesake and Tulsa's legendary golf coach Dale McNamara looking on, the Golden Hurricane women captured a one-stroke victory over Nebraska to claim the Dale McNamara Invitational Championship on Tuesday.
The Tulsa victory was its second straight tournament title and third top-3 finish in four fall events. The Hurricane previously won the Barbara Nicklaus Cup last week at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
"I was so impressed with this young group. They made some clutch putts down the stretch, some difference makers on 17. I was very, very proud of this group. It was a good team effort and that's what it will take all year long," said Tulsa Head Coach Annie Young.
Tulsa carded a final round 2-over par 290 on Tuesday for 4-over par 54-hole total of 868 to hold off the Cornhuskers' furious comeback attempt. Nebraska, 14 shots out of first place at the start of the day, turned in the best round at 8-under par 280 and finished with its 869 total score.
The Hurricane counted three scores of 73 and a 1-under par 71 in the final round for the team score. Sophomore Lovisa Gunnar, freshman Grace Kilcrease and senior Lilly Thomas placed among the top-10 for the tournament.
Gunnar placed second overall with a 214 total, finishing one stroke behind individual medalist Miu Takahashi from Nebraska. Gunnar, Kilcrease and Thomas each carded 73, while sophomore Sydney Seigel turned in her best score of the tournament with 1-under par 71.
"It was a total team effort," Young added.
Kilcrease placed sixth with a 217 score, while Thomas finished in 10th place with a score of 218. Seigel finished in 16th place with a 221 total. Tulsa freshman Emily Boehrer and Jenni Roller, who played as an individual, finished in 42nd and 59th place, respectively.
After the victory, Tulsa shared in its celebration with the matriarch of women's golf Dale McNamara.
"It was neat having Dale out here. She's done so much for women's golf, not just only at Tulsa but everywhere else.
"It was neat to be able to come back here to Cedar Ridge Country Club. I had coaches tell mee that had played this course back in the 1980s. It's great that we have a city that is so welcoming to us and with private clubs letting us use their facilities. The staff here was so important to putting on a great tournament. They made it so I could actually coach and not deal with the operation of the tournament. They were so welcoming to all the teams," said Young.
Tulsa will close out the fall season at the Jim West Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, October 23-24.
