TULSA, Okla.  ––
For the fourth season in a row and sixth overall, the University of Tulsa cross-country teams swept the team titles at the American Athletic Conference Championships after a fantastic performance at Mohawk Park on Friday morning.

The Golden Hurricane also swept the individual titles as Chloe Hershenow and Isaac Akers placed first in the women's 6k and men's 8k. Hershenow is the first Hurricane woman to win the women's race as members of The American. She pulled away from the pack to finish in 20:54.4.

"I'm so happy for Chloe," head coach Steve Gulley said. "Deep down, I felt I had two athletes who were probably ready to be in that position, her and Layla Roebke, and you wish them both the best. I'm excited because she's getting a lot of confidence going into the indoor and outdoor season and I hope it pays off."

In the men's race, Cormac Dalton and Micheal Power ran with Akers as the three runners held a more than 10-second lead on fourth place and powered the 7th-ranked Hurricane to victory. Akers finished in 23:51.7 to take the individual title, but either of the three could have won.

"I was wondering if they were going to do rock, paper, scissors to decide who would finish first," Gulley said. "It really shows the culture of our team where it's not about the individual but about the team. I'm really proud of all of them."

It was the fourth consecutive win for the women and sixth as a member of The American. The Hurricane had three runners in the top five and four make all-conference. After Hershenow, Layla Roebke came in at 20:57.0 to place third and Katharina Pesendorfer was a second behind in 20:58.6 to place fourth. Sara Scott navigated the course in 21:20.1 to grab 11th and an all-conference honor. The first seven Tulsa women all placed in the top 30. Chloe McEachern rounded out the scoring Hurricane runners with 18th place. Keely Jones and Robyn Kowalski took 26th and 27th, respectively.

Tulsa finished with a score of 37, 29 better than second place SMU.

"I had two girls who factored into my top five who hadn't raced in a month," Gulley said. "You have athletes coming off sickness and you never know what's going to happen, but they all stepped up and I'm so proud of them."

The men bested second-place Wichita State by 36 points, 29-65, with five runners earning All-AAC accolades. After the top three, Malte Propp placed eighth and Luke Lambert nabbed both all-conference and The American Freshman of the Year honors with a 15th-place finish in 24:27.4. Max Nores was just behind him at 24:33.6.

Ryan Shumaker and Sean Korsmo posted near identical times as Shumaker edged Korsmo out for 20th by less than a second. Christian Baker took 30th in 25:10.2.

For the men, it was the ninth consecutive conference title, and 13th in a row dating back to 2010, when Tulsa finished its time in Conference USA with four titles.

"There is pressure, I don't care what anybody says," Gulley said. "There's always press on you. You feel you have to keep it going and you have to do it for your school. It's about our program, but it's a lot of what we bring to the school.

"It's something we talk about every week: The culture of the program, what we're here to do and how we should do the best we can. The guys stepped up today and I was extremely pleased with the performance."

With the team titles, coach Gulley and Devin Clark were named women's coaching staff of the year, while Taylor Gulley and Aidan Fiol earned the honors for the men's side. Next up for the Golden Hurricane is the Midwest Regional on Nov. 11 in Columbia, Mo. The NCAA Championships are set for the following week in Stillwater, Okla.
