ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Navy jumped out to an early lead and continued to play its most consistent football throughout in a 53-21 victory over Tulsa Saturday in front of 30,658 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Tulsa fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while Navy improved to 2-3 and 2-1 in league play.

Navy gained 490 total yards with 455 of that coming on the ground, while the Hurricane put up 309 yards in total offense, including 284 through the air. Tulsa's Keylon Stokes moved into second place on the school's all-time receiving chart with 152 yards, and now is just 28 yards shy of all-time record-holder Howard Twilley's record of 3,343 receiving yards.

The Midshipmen came out after halftime and added to its 22-point lead on a first-possession touchdown, after a fake punt, that covered 75 yards in nine plays and gave the home team a 43-14 lead at the 10:06 mark of the third quarter.

Navy added three more points after a Tulsa fumble before the Hurricane responded on its next possession. Tulsa put together an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive as Steven Anderson ran in from one yard out to make the score 46-21 with 1:43 gone in the final quarter.

After going only 19 yards on its first possession of the game, Navy would go on to gain 301 first-half yards and score on six of its next seven possessions to take a 36-14 halftime lead.

Navy scored its first points of the game with a 25-yard field goal at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter, capping a 57-yard, 7 play drive. The Midshipmen took a 10-0 lead on its next possession when freshman receiver Nathan Kent ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on his first career play for Navy.

Tulsa responded with a 75-play, 7-play drive that took just 1:42 off the clock as Davis Brin connected with Malachai Jones on a 22-yard pass for the score, cutting the Navy lead to three points at 10-7.

The Midshipmen responded with another long touchdown run, covering 47 yards by Daba Fofana, and capping a 4-play, 72-yard drive, taking just 2:02 off the game clock and giving the home team a 17-7 lead. After Tulsa went 3-and-out, a 57-yard Navy punt return to the Tulsa 22-yard line set up a Fofana 15-yard TD run for a 24-7 lead with 10:57 left in the second quarter.

Navy added a safety as the Midshipmen tackled Brin in the end zone for two points and a 26-7 lead at the 10:07 mark.

An interception put Navy right back in Tulsa territory at the Hurricane 34-yard line and seven plays later scored on Fofana's third TD run of the game.

Tulsa responded in two plays as Brin found Keylon Stokes for 76 yards and a touchdown, cutting its deficit to 19 points. The Mids kicked a 46-yard field goal with 0:11 left on the clock to take a 22-point halftime lead.

At intermission, Navy held a 304 to 181-yard edge in yards. Navy had 295 rushing yards and just nine passing yards, while Tulsa gained 188 yards through the air and was -7 on the ground.

After an off day next Saturday, Tulsa travels to Philadelphia, Pa., for a Friday night, Oct. 21 matchup against the Temple Owls. Tulsa returns home for Homecoming on Oct. 9 against the SMU Mustangs.
