Tulsa Drops 81-62 Decision at #22 Kansas

GAME STATS  I  SEASON STATS 

The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped an 81-62 decision to #22 Kansas on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-3 on the season, while the Jayhawks moved to 10-0 overall.
 
Tulsa had four players in double digits, including a team-best 15 points by Jessika Evans, 14 by Temira Poindexter, 13 by Delanie Crawford and 10 by Maya Mayberry.
 
Tulsa will return to action on Monday, December 19 against Northwestern State beginning at 6:30 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
How it Happened
After missing their first four shots and trailing just 5-0, Tulsa's Temira Poindexter, Jessika Evans and Maya Mayberry all hit three's to put the Golden Hurricane up 9-7 with 6:13 on the clock in the first quarter.  Mayberry's trey put in her in TU's record books for three-pointers made with 122.
 
Maya Mayberry scored on a layup to tie the game 11-11 with 5:04 on the clock, but the Jayhawks scored the next nine points to make it 20-11 with 2:24 to play in the frame and owned a 25-17 advantage at the end of the quarter.
 
The Golden Hurricane started the second quarter with a 10-1 run to take a 27-26 lead with 7:07 on the clock, forcing the Jayhawks to call a timeout.  TU climbed to a 32-26 lead with 4:13 to play in the second quarter, holding the Jayhawks to just one point until Zakiyah Franklin hit a jumper with 3:11 on the clock.  Tulsa had a 7-6 scoring advantage over Kansas to close out the first half with a 39-24 lead.
 
KU battled back, outscoring TU, 13-8, to start the third quarter and tie the contest at 47-all with 5:10 on the clock in the frame.  The Jayhawks then put together a 12-3 run to close out the quarter with a 59-50 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
 
The Jayhawks outscored the Golden Hurricane 22-12 in the final frame to claim the 81-62 win.
 
Game Notes
  • With a three-pointer at the 6:13 mark of the first quarter, Maya Mayberry moved into the top 10 in school history with three-pointers made with 122.  She finished game with two treys.
  • KU was the 50th ranked opponent Tulsa has played in school history.  TU has yet to win against a ranked opponent. 
  • Tulsa had four players in double digits, including a team-best 15 points by Jessika Evans, 14 by Temira Poindexter, 13 by Delanie Crawford and 10 by Maya Mayberry
  • Crawford owned a team-best eight rebounds, seven assists and four blocks, while Evans also contributed four blocks and had two steals
  • Tulsa shot 30.8 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from behind the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line, while Kansas shot 43.1 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 86.4 percent from the line.
  • Kansas had a 36-12 lead in points in the paint,  21-8 advantage in second chance points, a 14-11 lead in points off turnovers, and 11-5 lead in fast break points and a 6-3 edge in bench points
  • TU had an 18-11 lead in assists and a 9-4 advantage in blocks, while KU had a 54-28 lead in rebounds and a 6-5 edge in steals
  • KU was led by Zakiyah Franklin with 26 points, while Taiyanna Jackson had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Ioanna Chatzileonti had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards, and Chandler Prater had 13 points
