AUSTIN, Texas
– The University of Tulsa softball split its games against Texas State and the No. 23 Texas Longhorns on Sunday afternoon at the Texas Classic.

The Golden Hurricane built a sizeable lead against Texas State, but it took a four-run seventh to put the Bobcats away 9-5 in the day's opener. In the nightcap, the Longhorns used small ball to beat the Hurricane 14-1 in five innings.

The Hurricane moved to 4-7 after the two matchups, while Texas State is 6-4 after Sunday's games. The Longhorns improved to 7-7 after winning its two contests.

Game 1
Tulsa squandered a late lead but managed to overcome the setback to beat Texas State 9-5 in its first game on Sunday afternoon. The Hurricane scored its nine runs on 11 hits and committed two errors. Texas State scored its five runs on seven hits and made three errors.

Kylee Nash (1-1) picked up the win after coming on in relief, while Presley Glende (0-1) took the loss after pitching 4.0 innings in relief.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Tulsa lit up the scoreboard for four runs in the third. Kennedy Cramer, making her first start of the season, tripled to open the frame. After a walk to Kylie Norwood, Haley Morgan drove Cramer in with a double. A throwing error on a sac-bunt from Celeste Wood brought in the second run. Abby Jones picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly, and the final run came in after Imani Edwards singled up the middle and the shortstop threw the ball away.

The Hurricane added a fifth run in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Jones singled to left to get on base. She was hustling on the ensuing at-bat as MaKayla Jackson drove her in with a single down the right field line.

Through five innings, senior Samantha Pochop was shutting Texas State down. Headed into the sixth, she had allowed only one hit. However, Texas State finally got to her in the bottom of the frame, dinging her for four straight singles, cutting Tulsa's lead to 5-2. Pochop got the next batter to fly out to get the first out, but a double made it 5-3 and put the tying run in scoring position.

Nash came in to try to shut down the Bobcats. Pochop left having pitched 5.1 innings. She gave up six hits, allowed five earned runs, struck out three and walked no batters. Nash retired the first batter she faced, but a two-out double leveled the score at five.

The Hurricane responded to the challenge in the top of the seventh, as Jones tripled to get herself in scoring position immediately. Jackson picked up her second RBI of the afternoon with a single up the middle to reestablish Tulsa's lead. Gracie Jarvis pinch ran for Jackson and Claira Skaggs pinch hit after a walk put runners on first and second.

Skaggs came through with an RBI single to drive in Jarvis. Cramer followed with an RBI single to put Tulsa up 8-5 and Morgan drove in the ninth run with a sacrifice fly.

Sara Llamas-Howell entered the circle in the bottom of the seventh to close out the Bobcats. She alternated walks and outs in the final frame, walking the first batter before getting the next batter to pop out. She then followed the second and third walks with strikeouts to end the game.

Game 2

Tulsa scored first, but the Longhorns responded with 14 unanswered to top the Golden Hurricane 14-1 in five innings on Sunday night.

Tulsa had three hits and committed four errors while Texas got its 14 runs with 11 hits, only one of which was for extra bases, committed no errors and drew six walks. The Longhorns scored three in the first, eight in the third and three in the fourth to win.

Freshman Makenzie Brown (0-2) took the ball for Tulsa in the late game. She threw 2.1 innings and struck out four batters, allowing seven runs, six earned and walking two. Kylee Nash pitched the latter innings, going 1.2 frames, which resulted in seven runs, none of which were earned.

Haley Morgan was the first Tulsa runner to reach base after getting hit by a pitch with one out. She stole second and was brought home by a MaKayla Jackson double down the left field line. However, Jackson and Celeste Wood would get stranded on the base paths.

The Longhorns took the lead in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff single was followed by a steal of second, one of six stolen bases. An infield single tied the game. Another stolen base moved a runner into scoring position. Texas' only extra base hit, a double, drove the second run in and the third run came via a bloop single to the outfield.

Kailyn Bearpaw singled to lead off the second, but a double play erased the advantage. Kennedy Cramer doubled to the wall but was left stranded at second and was Tulsa's last hit.

Nash got the first two batters out in the bottom of the second, but an error kept her from a clean inning. A passed ball and stolen base placed the runner at third, but Nash buckled down to strike out the Texas batter and end the threat.

The Longhorns blew the game open in the third inning, scoring eight runs to go up 11-1. Texas loaded the bases on three occasions in the inning and had four singles, five walks and stole three bases in the inning. Texas would go on to add three runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included three straight singles with two outs.

Tulsa will finish the Texas Classic with two games on Monday. The Hurricane take on UTSA at 11:00 a.m. before a rematch with the Texas Longhorns at 1:30 p.m. on the Longhorn Network.
