Inclement weather changes schedule at Texas Classic
GAME NOTES I SEASON STATS
AUSTIN, Texas – The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will be back in action this weekend at the Texas Classic at Red & Charline McCombs Field. Inclement weather in the southwest has altered the tournament schedule and games will now be played on Friday, Sunday and Monday.
Tulsa (3-6) will play its first game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Texas State (5-3) and will follow that up with the #23-ranked Texas Longhorns (5-6) at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Tulsa opens the action at 11 a.m. against UTSA (3-7) before a 1:30 p.m. battle against the Longhorns. No 22-ranked Arizona State is also part of the tournament.
The young Hurricane team is coming off a 2-2 weekend record at the LA Tech Invitational a week ago. Tulsa claimed an 8-7 win over the host team with all eight of its runs coming in the first half of the final inning. Trailing 7-0 in the top of the 7th, Tulsa scored its eight runs on six hits as freshman Celeste Wood had her second game-winning hit of the season with a triple to score two runs.
Tulsa also scored a 4-0 win over Sam Houston as senior Samantha Pochop pitched a one-hit, nine-strike-out game for her second victory of the season. Tulsa's two losses last weekend were each in the last at-bats for the opponents.
A week earlier, the Hurricane claimed its first win of the season in an extra inning comeback where Tulsa trailed 8-0 after the first half-inning and 10-2 after two innings. Tulsa tied the score at 10-10 with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning and it was the freshman Wood's single in bottom of the 12th inning that scored two runs for a 13-12 victory.
In the nine-game season, Wood leads the Hurricane with team-highs of a .414 batting average, .793 slugging percentage, 12 hits and a league-best 15 RBI. Wood is second in the league for double (5) and triples (3). Sophomore Haley Morgan follows Wood with a .357 batting average on 10 hits, three RBI and nine runs scored.
Pochop has thrown a total of 28.0 innings with 31 strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA. She ranks second in the American Athletic Conference for strikeouts, while leading the league with 12 batters struck out looking.
All games are scheduled to be aired on the Longhorn Network.
Tulsa will open the home season next weekend, Friday-Saturday, March 4-5, by hosting the TU/OSU Invitational. Tulsa kicks off action on Friday with a doubleheader against DePaul beginning at 2:30 p.m. Minnesota and Stanford , both receiving votes in the national poll, are also part of the tournament.
