The University of Tulsa women's basketball coach Angie Nelp announced today the signing of UTEP transfer Katia Gallegos to the 2022-23 signing class.
"Katia is a great addition to our family," Nelp said. "It's important to us that we find players that fit our culture and mesh with our team, and I think we found a perfect fit with Katia. She has established herself as a great player who brings with her multiple all-conference accolades,
along with national team experience. Katia has an established skill set that fits our style of play and I'm excited about what her experience, ability and passion will add to our team."
A 5-7 guard from El Paso, Texas, Gallegos transferred to Tulsa after playing three seasons at UTEP, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. As a Miner, Gallegos recorded 967 points, 390 assists, 342 rebounds, 146 steals and 19 blocks, while starting in all 84 games played. She shot 37 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line, and had one double-double, 50 double-figure scoring games, two double-digit assist performances and one double-figure rebounding game.
Gallegos was a two-time All-Conference USA honoree and was tabbed to the all-freshman team during the 2019-20 campaign.
Prior to UTEP, Gallegos was a four-year letterwinner at Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas. She earned all-district, all-region and all-state honors, while posting 21.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a senior. Gallegos helped her team claim two Class 6A district championships and was named the district MVP once.
Gallegos also played for Mexico in the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship in Mexico City and the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the U18 games, she averaged 8.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, while scoring in double figures in four of six games.
