Hershenow, Lynch Win 10,000-Meter Runs on Day One of AAC Championships

WICHITA, Kan. Chloe Hershenow and Peter Lynch both claimed first in the 10,000-meter run Friday night during the opening day of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Tulsa men are currently in second place with 27 points, while the women are in third with 16 points.

 
Hershenow's win marks the second straight year that Tulsa has won the 10k, following Caitlin Klopfer's victory last season. Hershenow set a new personal-best at 36:06.60 and was nearly five seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Caroline Miller finished in fourth at 36:31.35, Sara Scott's time of 37:09.15 put her in eighth, and Alice Newcombe tallied a top-10 finish at 37:38.54.
 
Lynch's win completed the Hurricane sweep in the 10k, taking gold with a time of 30:54.92, as Malte Propp finished in second at 31:08.44, while Jerik Embleton crossed the finish line in third at 31:12.37. Ryan Shumaker finished in seventh, while Michael Gates came in eighth, both earning points towards the team total.
 
Tulsa had five runners qualify for the finals today. On the women's side, Anna Mager qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, while Chloe McEachern, Keely Jones, and Tamara Reeves all qualified for the 1,500-meter finals. On the men's side, Henry Visser will compete for gold in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Those finals will take place tomorrow evening.
 
The American Outdoor Track & Field Championships continues tomorrow, with track events beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Cessna Stadium.
