The Tulsa women's basketball team will take on 13 teams in the non-conference portion of the 2022-23 campaign, including seven home games at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, four true road contests and two neutral site games, as announced today by second-year head coach Angie Nelp.
"We are excited to release our non-conference schedule for the 2022-23 season," Nelp said. "This schedule will test us early and help us to grow both individually and as a team. Ultimately, I think this schedule will prepare us for the challenges we will face in a very competitive American Athletic Conference."
TU will take on three teams that made postseason play a year ago, nine teams that recorded double-digit wins and six teams that Tulsa has never faced on the basketball court.
The Golden Hurricane will begin the season with a pair of home games against Alcorn State (Nov. 7) and San Jose State (Nov. 10). Tulsa and the Spartans have met 18 times, but haven't played against each other since each were members of the Western Athletic Conference. The last meeting came in the 2004-05 campaign. SJSU is currently a member of the Mountain West Conference. This will be Tulsa's first meeting against ASU, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Tulsa will then make the short trip over to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas (Nov. 14), before returning home to host crosstown rival Oral Roberts (Nov. 20). The Razorbacks registered 18 wins last season and advanced to the NCAA First Round, while the Golden Eagles picked up 16 wins a year ago. TU tallied a 69-55 win in the Mabee Center last season to extend their ownership of the annual Mayor's Cup trophy since 2018.
TU heads to San Francisco for a Thanksgiving tournament that includes games against two opponents the Hurricane has never faced – Long Beach State (Nov. 25) and South Carolina State (Nov. 26). The Beach won 19 games last season and advanced to the WNIT First Round.
Up next, Tulsa will cross the country and head to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on Duquesne (Dec. 1). The Hurricane earned a 77-62 victory over the Dukes at the Reynolds Center to begin the 2021-22 campaign.
A three-game home stretch is on the slate next for TU, including Lindenwood (Dec. 4), Prairie View A&M (Dec. 8) and Central Arkansas (Dec. 11). PVA&M posted 13 wins a year ago. This will also be the first time TU has faced the Panthers and Lions, but the Hurricane took a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with UCA by claiming a 32-point victory, 78-46, last season.
In the final three games of the non-conference slate, Tulsa will travel to Kansas (Dec. 16), return home to host Northwestern State (Dec. 19) and then hit the road against Texas Southern (Dec. 22). The Jayhawks netted 21 wins and advanced to the NCAA Second Round a year ago, while the Lady Demons recorded 12 wins and the Tigers had 11.
The conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
