Four Tulsa Players Score in Doubles Figures in 77-72 Loss at Tulane

Temira Poindexter, Maddie Bittle, Maya Mayberry and Katelyn Levings all scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 77-72 decision at Tulane on Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, La.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 15-4 on the season and 5-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moved to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the league.
 
Poindexter had a team-best 24 points, while Bittle added 18, Mayberry had 12 and Levings tallied 10.  Delanie Crawford finished with a team-best seven rebounds, nine assists and two steals.
 
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, January 25 against South Florida beginning at 4:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
How it Happened
Maya Mayberry started off Tulsa's scoring with a three-pointer, but then Temira Poindexter tallied the next nine points for the Golden Hurricane for a 12-10 lead at the 4:19 mark.  The teams ended the first frame tied 14-14.
 
Tulane owned a first half best six-point lead, 26-20, with 6:23 on the clock in the second quarter, but Maddie Bittle recorded three-straight layups for Tulsa to tie the game at 26-all with 4:40 to play in the frame.  Tulane had a four-point lead three times in the remainder of the half and took a 34-30 edge into the locker room.
 
Tulane's Rachel Hakes scored a layup to begin the third quarter, putting the Green Wave up by six once again, but Tulsa battled to tie the score at 38-38 and then again at 43-43 with 5:03 on the clock.  Tulane, however, scored seven-straight points for a 50-43 lead with 3:12 to play in the quarter and owned a 55-45 advantage at the end of the frame.
 
Three-pointers by Katelyn Levings and Mayberry and a jumper by Poindexter pulled Tulsa to within two, 55-53, with 8:08 on the clock in the fourth quarter.  The Green Wave, however, put together their own run and climbed to a nine-point advantage, 69-60, with 3:52 to play in the contest.  
 
Tulsa cut their deficit to four, 71-67, on a three-pointer by Mayberry with 34 seconds to play and then once against at 74-70 on a trey by Levings with 26 seconds remaining.  The Green Wave scored three free throws and Levings had a layup to end the contest with the five-point loss.
 
Game Notes
  • With 18 points today, Maddie Bittle now has 877 points to move into 18th place on Tulsa's all-time scoring chart
  • Maya Mayberry ranks sixth in three-point field goals made in school history with 147, while Maddie Bittle is in seventh place with 143
  • Maya Mayberry tallied four threes in the contest marking the seventh time this season she has hit at least four, including seven against South Carolina State, five at Texas Southern and UCF, and four treys against Alcorn State, Arkansas, Central Arkansas and now Tulane
  • Poindexter had a team-best 24 points, while Bittle added 18 points, Mayberry had 12 and Levings tallied 10.  This was their 18th, 12th, 11th and third double figure scoring games on the season, respectively.
  • Temira Poindexter had a team-best 13 points at halftime, while Maddie Bittle added 10.  This was the fifth time that both Poindexter and Bittle have tallied double figures by halftime this season.
  • Temira Poindexter has recorded 11 20+ scoring games, including seven this season
  • Tulsa shot 41.7 percent from the field, but just 25 percent from behind the arc and 60 percent from the line (3-of-5), while Tulane shot 49.2 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three-point range and 76.5 percent from the line (13-of-17)
  • Tulane had a 40-34 lead in rebounds and a 4-1 advantage in blocks, while Tulsa had a 22-21 edge in assists … both teams had eight steals.
  • Tulsa had a 16-12 edge in points off turnovers and an 8-4 lead in second chance points, while Tulane had a 38-26 lead in points in the paint and an 18-12 advantage in fast break points.
  • Tulane was led by four players in double figures, including 19 by Marta Galic, 17 by Kyren Whittington, 14 by Dynah Jones and 10 by Anijah Grant.  Rachel Hakes had eight rebounds and 10 assists, while Galic had three steals and Grant had two blocks
