The Rice Owls took a 14-0 first quarter lead and went on for a 42-10 victory over Tulsa Thursday night in front of 18,527 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Tulsa fell to 3-4 and 1-2 The American, while Rice improved to 4-3 and 2-1 in league standings.
 
The Owls outgained the Hurricane 516 to 280 yards for the game with 333 of those yards for the Owls coming through the air. Tulsa managed 156 rushing yards and 138 yards through the air.
 
Cardell Williams had 101 yards and one TD passing, while fellow quarterback Braylon Braxton led the Hurricane in rushing with 89 yards. Rice's JT Daniels completed 24-of-37 passes for 342 yards and two TDs, while Dean Connors led the ground game with 120 yards and three touchdowns.
 
Two of three first quarter turnovers led to Rice's two touchdowns and a 14-0 first quarter lead. Tulsa scored its 10 first-half points in the final six minutes. The first Hurricane score came on a 45-yard Chase Meyer field goal and a series later Cardell Williams connected with Kamdyn Benjamin on a 30-yard pass play to make the score 14-10.
 
Before the half, Rice went 74 yards in 0:36 to take a 21-10 lead into halftime.
 
After holding Tulsa to 3-and-out on the first second-half possession, the Owls went 75 yards in six plays, taking 3:28 off the clock, to take a 28-10 lead at the 9:47 mark of the third period. Rice took a 35-10 lead just before the end of the third quarter. The Owls added a 96-yard, 14-play scoring drive that gave the Owls its final 32-point win margin.
 
Rice controlled the tempo in the second half with a 22:33 to 7:37-minute advantage in possession time, while outgaining the Hurricane over the final 30 minutes 258-to-49 yards of total offense. The edge in the third period was 166-to-9, while Rice held a 92-to-40-yard edge in the final stanza.
 
Tulsa safety Kendarin Ray led all tacklers with a new career-best of 15 stops.
 
Tulsa travels to SMU next Saturday, while the Owls play host to Tulane.
 
 
1st Quarter Breakdown
•       Both first quarter scores for Rice came after Tulsa turnovers.
•       After an interception, Rice took its first drive 70 yards in two plays in taking just 0:46 off the clock as Connor Dean raced 54 yards for a 7-0 lead.
•       The Owls struck quickly again after getting the ball off a Tulsa fumble. It took Rice just 0:55 for its second score when JT Daniels hit Luke McCaffrey on a 21-yad pass.
 
2nd Quarter Breakdown
•       Tulsa scored its first points at the 5:45 mark of the quarter on a new career-long of 45 yards by Chase Meyer.
•       Cardell Williams hit Kamdyn Benjamin for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the period to cut Tulsa's deficit to four points, 14-10.
•       The Owls took the subsequent possession 74 yards in six plays, taking just 0:36 off the clock, to take a 21-10 lead with just 0:33 left on the first half clock.
 
3rd Quarter Breakdown
•       Rice took its first second-half possession 75 yards in six plays as JT Daniels ran in from eight yards out to give the Owls a 28-10 lead.
  •  The Owls scored its second TD of the half for its 21st straight point after the Hurricane cut an early 14-0 deficit to 14-10 in the second quarter. A two-yard Dean Connor run capped a 91-yard, 13-play drive that took 8:05 off the clock.
•        For the quarter, Rice outgained Tulsa 166-to-9 with 132 of those yards coming through the air, while controlling the ball, 11:33 to 3:27.
 
4th Quarter Breakdown
•       The Owls continued its stranglehold on the ball, holding a time advantage of10:50 to 4:10 with its lone fourth quarter score went 96 yards in 14 plays and took 9:56 off the clock.
•       The Hurricane managed only 40 fourth quarter yards on 11 plays in the period.
