Tulsa Falls to SMU in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas –– The league-leading SMU Mustangs cruised to a 69-10 victory over Tulsa Saturday afternoon in front of an SMU Homecoming crowd of 20,800 fans at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
The Mustangs scored on all but one of its first-half possessions to take a 52-3 lead into halftime. It was the most points given up by a Tulsa team since a 48-0 halftime deficit against Houston in an 82-28 loss in 1988. Tulsa's three first-half points came on Chase Meyer's 35-yard field goal to make the score 14-3 in the first period.
In the first 30 minutes, SMU held a 440 to 110-yard edge in total offense with 371 of those yards coming in the passing game and 69 on the ground.
SMU scored on its first second-half possession to give the Ponies a 59-3 lead at the 8:21 mark of the third period. The Mustangs added 10 more second half points, while the Hurricane scored its first TD in the fourth quarter on a five-yard TD toss from Cardell Williams to Kamdyn Benjamin.
SMU ended the game with 638 yards, while Tulsa had 247 yards of total offense.
Tulsa will host Charlotte next Saturday on Homecoming in a 3 p.m. (CT) game at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
1st Quarter Breakdown
• SMU opened the scoring on just its second play from scrimmage on a 74-yard touchdown pass.
• After holding Tulsa on a 4th-and-1 from Tulsa's own 41-yard line, the Mustangs took possession and made the score 14-0 with just 5:26 gone in the period, going 41 yards in six plays.
• Tulsa put points on the scoreboard with a 35-yard Chase Meyer field goal at the 4:44 mark to make the score 14-3.
• SMU took its third possession of the game in for another score, going 72 yards in eight plays for a 21-3 lead.
• With just 0:26 remaining in the first quarter, the Mustangs made it 28-3 with a 25-yard interception return.
2nd Quarter Breakdown
• Tulsa held SMU to a field goal on the Mustangs first second quarter drive, giving SMU a 31-3 lead at the 12:07 mark.
• After another Tulsa turnover, the Mustangs scored on its first play with a 62-yard pass from Preston Stone to RJ Maryland to take a 38-3 lead with 11:35 remaining in the first half.
• The Mustangs added two more touchdowns before the end of the half to take a 52-3 halftime lead.
• SMU out-gained Tulsa in the quarter 252 to 19 yards, but only had a 0:04 advantage in possession time for the period.
• SMU ended the first half with a 440 to-110-yard edge in total offense.
• The 52 points for SMU was the most first half points for an opponent since a 48-0 Houston lead in an 82-28 win in the 1988 season.
3rd Quarter Breakdown
• Tulsa went 3-and-out on its first second half possession.
• The Mustangs responded with a 12-play, 70-yard drive to go ahead 59-3 at the 8:21 mark of the quarter.
• SMU added a 48-yard TD run to give the Mustangs 66 points with 3:50 left in the quarter.
4th Quarter Breakdown
• The Hurricane scored its first touchdown of the game on a 68-yard, 12-play drive that saw Cardell Williams throw the final five yards to Kamdyn Benjamin.
• Tulsa held the Mustangs to just a 22-yard field goal in the final stanza.
