TULSA, Okla. – The ninth-ranked Memphis Tigers scored goals at the beginning and end of the first half as the Tulsa women's soccer team fell 2-0 in the regular season finale at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Golden Hurricane finishes the regular season with a 5-8-5 record, 3-2-4 in conference play, while Memphis closes with a 15-1 record and a perfect 9-0 mark in league play.
Tulsa now awaits the American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship, which the Hurricane will appear in for the first time since 2015. TU has earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 SMU in the third quarterfinal on Tuesday evening in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. Kickoff will start no earlier than 3:35 p.m. (CT) and the matchup will air on ESPN+.
How it Happened
The Tigers attack broke through early with a goal right at the three minute mark. Anna Hauer whipped in a cross and it was met by the head of Mya Jones, who drove it past the keeper for the first goal of the game and the eighth of Jones' season.
Both teams found shooting opportunities in the first half as each team took 10 shots. The Tigers had the best looks with five shots on goal, but Tulsa goalkeeper Tatum Sanders came up with three saves. The Golden Hurricane put two shots on frame, which were both saved by Memphis goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman.
The two teams came inches away from scoring as three shots hit the woodwork in the match. Madison Tokarchik nearly placed one over the head of Bierman in the 33rd minute, but it smashed off the crossbar.
With under a minute remaining in the opening half, Memphis drew a penalty as a Tiger was brought down in the box. Anne-Valerie Seto stepped up to take the spot kick, but was denied by a diving save from Sanders to her lower right. The ball fell right into the path of an oncoming Mya Jones, who was able to put away the rebound for her second goal of the night and give Memphis the 2-0 lead it would retain the rest of the way.
The second half saw another three shots on goal from the Tigers as Memphis outshot the hosts 7-1, but Sanders was up to the challenge, making three saves, including one to tip the ball onto the left post.
