Tulsa Women Post 60-58 Comeback Win Over UCA

TULSA, Okla. ––
Madi Cartwright scored the game-winning three-pointer as Tulsa overcame an eight-point deficit for a 60-58 victory over the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears Tuesday night in front of 2,822 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
The freshman hit two treys in the final 4:05, the first erasing a two-point deficit and the next giving the Hurricane a four-point lead. Her third three-pointer of the game put Tulsa ahead 57-56 and her next three-pointer gave the Hurricane a 60-56 lead with 2:59 remaining.
 
With the win, Tulsa snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-3, while UCA fell to 5-4 on the season.
 
Temira Poindexter led all scorers with 22 points, while Cartwright finished with 12 with those two treys accounting for all of her second-half points. Poindexter added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
 
With 6:31 remaining in the contest, UCA went ahead by eight points, 54-46, on a driving layup. Katia Gallegos' driving layup 0:10 later began a 12-2 run that put the home team ahead for the first time since the 4:18 mark of the third quarter.
 
"I'm proud of how we finished the game and happy to get the win at home. Central Arkansas is a good team that's well-coached with several outstanding players," said Tulsa head Coach Angie Nelp. "One thing about this team is that they always believe in each other and themselves, and I felt like that was a huge difference for us today. We didn't have the best third quarter and to be able to come back from that and be able to get those big stops at the end when we needed it was huge for our team."
 
The Sugar Bears overcame a six-point halftime deficit to take a 44-40 lead after three quarters as Kinley Fisher totaled 11 of her team-high 18 points in that period. UCA extended that lead to its largest of eight points before the Hurricane comeback.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Delanie Crawford opened the scoring with a corner three-pointer for Tulsa's early 3-0 lead.
 
UCA tied the score at 6-6 before Tulsa outscored the Sugar Bears 10-5 to close out the first 10 minutes with a 16-11 lead.
 
Temira Poindexter scored two of her first-quarter game-high 8 points with 0:01 on the clock for the five-point cushion.
 
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
After Tulsa opened period with Poindexter second chance jumper in the paint, UCA scored the next five points and cut its deficit to two points at 18-16.
 
The Hurricane took its largest lead of the first half at 29-20 with 2:36 remaining and ended the first 20 minutes with a 31-24 lead.
 
After a first period 40% field goal percentage, Tulsa shot just 29% in the second period … the Hurricane held UCA to under 30% in both quarters and an overall 25% for the half.
 
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
UCA opened the quarter on a 7-1 run to cut Tulsa's lead to one point, 32-31, before the Hurricane scored the next four points to take a 36-31 with just under five minutes left in the period.
 
Tulsa scored just nine points in the period, while UCA exploded for 20 to take a 44-40 lead after three quarters.  
 
The Lady Bears took its first lead of the game, 38-36, at the 3:23 mark on a Kinley Fisher jumper. Fisher scored UCA's next four points to put the visitors ahead by six at 42-36 and extended its lead to eight, 44-36, before the Hurricane tallied four straight points to close out the half.
 
Tulsa shot just 26.7% in the third quarter from the field and did not connect on a three-pointer, going 0-of-5.
 
UCA ended the quarter shooting 46% from the field, 50% from behind the arc and an even 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, as Fisher led the way for the Lady Bears with 11 points in the quarter.
 
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
UCA took its' largest lead of the game of eight points at 54-46 with 6:31 on the game clock.
 
Katia Gallegos' driving layup at the 6:21 mark began a 12-2 run that put the home team ahead for the first time since the 4:18 mark of the third quarter.
 
Then, freshman Mady Cartwright went to work knocking down two straight three-pointers, her first erasing a two-point deficit and her second giving the Hurricane a four-point lead at 60-56.
 
Tulsa outscored the Sugar Bears 20-14 in the final quarter.
 
 
GAME NOTES
• Tulsa moved to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 at home.
•  This was the fifth meeting between Tulsa and UCA, as the series now stands at 4-1 in favor of the Hurricane.
Temira Poindexter has now scored in double-digits in all nine games this year and for the 54th time in 67 career games.
• Poindexter scored 12 first-half points, giving her double digits in the first half of a game six times this season.
• Poindexter had her sixth game of 20+ points this season and 21 for her career æ she also had her sixth career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
